Hi, my name is Alex. I'm a dude. I'm 21 and will hopefully graduate college in the spring. Here's how I found my way here.

A couple weeks ago I was talking to a close friend about a few personality quirks of mine, how I struggle in social situations, how I struggle making new friends, how I'm generally frustrated by most people, and my general difficulty in romantic relationships. This, coupled with my encyclopedic knowledge of cars, (Ford Festivas especially) caused her to mentioned that I may be a little bit autistic. Curiosity got the better of me and that evening I took an autism quotient test on Newsweek's website. It sait most neurotypical males scored an average of 17 and most people with high functioning Autism or Aspergers scored an average of 35.

I scored a 36.

The next day I called my mother and asked if I had ever been professionally tested for Autism. She told me that when I was 15 or so a physchiatrist I'd been seeing for depression told her that I showed signs of Asperger Syndrome. I'm going to another doctor in a couple of days for further diagnosis.

If I am diagnosed, I think it would almost be a relief. Asperger Syndrome would answer so many questions and concerns about myself. I've fought depression for the better part of a decade and as of late, I've been happier than I have been for a long time. Even if I do turn out to be neurotypical, I hope to work out a big pile of issues in hopes of turning my life around.

Thanks for listening.

Welcome FestivaDriver,

However it turns out, we could use more people in the car club, lots of machine heads here.

I'm several decades older than you, and female, yet I felt exactly the same way. Not like I'd won the lottery or anything, :) but better-equipped to deal with life.

Welcome here!

Welcome to WP :D

I know what you mean by releif. I just found out myself and am going through the process of getting a diagnosis now. Its like the proverbial lightbulb going off in my head, I still cant explain it but it feels like it all makes more sense now.

Just curious, did your mother say any reason she kept this information from you?
Anyway, welcome to WrongPlanet. You seem like a nice guy.

Thanks. I like to think I'm nice.

I was dealing with a pretty serious case of depression at the time, and the doctor only casually mentioned it to my mother, not a serious diagnosis. I was loaded up on antidepressants shortly after that, and I evened out in your basic emotionless haze. Asperger's never crossed my mind until recently, and it was so casually mentioned to my mother, I'm sure she all but forgot about it. She's not really the overprotective type.

Anyway, it's great to be here. Thanks for the warm welcome.
