Hi! My name's Elizabeth. I was diagnosed with a NonVerbal Learning Disability in eigth grade and I'm currently in college at the College of Santa Fe, NM getting a double major in creative writing and religious studies. One person with Asperger's told me that NLD was essentially a different name for the same disorder and professionals have described it to me as a "cousin disorder."

I think this site is awesome. I wish I'd found it ten years ago - it would have helped me out a lot. I'm interested in talking about anything under the sun, particularly the relationship between Asperger's and NLD. I'm also very much interested in the journeys of other aspies through the world of higher education. I am constantly on the fence about staying in college. At times, the stress is damaging, but I understand the benefits of a degree in the long run.

If there are any Aspies in the area, I'd be happy to get together and meet up at some point.

I've heard/read that NVLD is AS but with slightly less social problems and having trouble remembering what places look like. From what I've read, assuming it's accurate, there is really not much of a difference.

Welcome to WP.

That is a pretty accurate description of NVLD. I have a very hard time finding my way around and I can't make sense of shapes very well - a sculpture class would be a nightmare for me. I think I'm about as confused socially as anyone with AS, but for some reason I can mask it a bit better.

Hi, welcome to wrongplanet. There are definate simularities between NVLD and AS, and in some accations they are used interchangeably or a relatively high percentage of people have both, but they are seperate disorders.

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome to WP :)

Like others who have commented, I don't think that there is much of a difference between AS and NLD. I think it makes sense for the doctors to say that it is a "cousin disorder". All I have heard is that NLD may be slightly milder with less noticable social eccentricities.

Yes I agree, this site is awesome. I am glad that I found it. I am sure that it will help you to better understand yourself.

I recently left my course in computing because of stress and anxiety. I am going to say that it was not necessarily a good choice for my future as I now don't get my qualification. But in the short term it has benefitted me as I am able to think carefully about what I want to do.

Anyway...I hope you enjoy posting here :)

I am very short - 4'10". My only name at school is Bite Size (and I love it.) The Kiwi part of my nickname was given to me by my parents as they took a trip to New Zealand shortly before I was born. I wish I was from there. It sounds like an amazing country. But I am 100% American.
