Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself, I'm new around here. Haven't even lurked around, so if (when) I do something stupid or obvious, I ask your patience. My name is Jodie, and I'm the mother of a three-and-a-half year old Aspie. I'm here seeking your advice and experience to help me guide my little man into a well-adjusted adulthood. I believe that Asperger's (like everything else in life) has both challenges and rewards, and I want to teach my son to meet his challenges courageously, and to use his gifts to make the world a better place. (I sound so idealistic!)
Looking forward to getting to know you!
:)

Hello and welcome, Jodie.

I'm mom to 2 teenage sons with AS and a teenager and a daughter with ADD. Life is never dull at my house.
Please visit the Parent's forum. You'll find very good support and advice there.

Welcome Merriweather18,

3.5 is young for an aspie diagnosis - he must have some good language skills.

I've got a 7 y.o. aspie and a 4 y.o. hfa - both boys of course.

Hello Merriweather, I can give advice on how to bring up your three year old Aspie into a big world! ABA is a programme (it should be easier to find if you're in the USA) than can perform miracles by helping an Autistic or Aspie child! :D Other people may say it's useless but it's helped me far more than those people could ever imagine!! If it doesn't work, then I'm sorry I've ever brought it up, but, especially if you do it yourself, then it should help quite a lot!

Hi Gavin!

You are correct on the young diagnosis. We were lucky to have a wonderful psychologist who really tested him extensively, and came up with strong evidence of Asperger's. Then the fun began, because it is very difficult to find research/literature on young children with Asperger's. Most of the books and articles are based on and geared to children of school age. So I have come to rely heavily on the experience of adult Aspies that I can contact throught the internet. I was so happy when I saw the thread in the parenting forum about 'What my parents could have done to help'. I am working my way through it, may even print it out!

You are also correct on the language skills, he's a very effective communicator, although he frequently uses echolalia, his placement of phrases is astoundingly accurate. He went rapidly from minimal babbling to use of full words, and is the king of placing echolalic phrases into context. He amazes me all of the time. I also suspect hyperlexia, because his newest favorite thing to do is spell words backwards, then forwards. The first word he ever did this with was umbrella, so he definitely got my attention with that one.

Thank you for the welcome, and I look forward to "talking" with you about your experiences with your little guys!
:)
Jodie

Welcome Jodie. WP is a wonderful place to educate yourself about Asperger's. And a good support system as well.

Merriweather18,

WP is definately the right place to go for info and feedback.

You might also be interested in my blog since it's about the condition rather than being like a lot of other blogs which are day-to-day ramblings. (I have a completely separate blog for my ramblings).

This blog (http://life-with-aspergers.blogspot.com) is my "storehouse" of what I've learnt on the aspie condition and I update it often. I'm eventually hoping that it will suffice as a free online "book".
