Hi there,

I am new to this site but have posted on a few others. Was told about here from someone else so thought I'd join here.

My name is Kim -- married mom to 3 kids with one that is dx as PDD. His dx came a year ago and now that he has been in therapy/school and us learning more, we along with a couple of his therapists feel he's more aspergers. I'm not sure what the difference would be having a different dx though. Jaxson (Jax as we often call him) is high functioning with very low functioning emotional skills. :) He speaks a ton and often times what he says amazes us.

He is currently showing signs that he's reading. However, it hasnt been something we've taught him nor has the school. We're not certain how he's doing it and when we ask him what something says he doesn't answer. It's spontaneous (the menu at school, boxes, etc.)

I am doing all I can to learn about his dx as I have been for the past year and prior as we suspected he was autistic before the dx came. He's had many many issues (major head surgery at 18 months, wore helmet early in life from 6 months to 11 months, skin problems, etc). So, this DX is just one more to his already full plate.

I'm sure I'll post again... but I'm off to read some to learn. Thank you, C.Darmin for pointing me here. :)

Welcome Iextraspecial,

First stop the parents forum, they do know about stuff.

For general fun and insight, there is the rest of the site, and us.

Thanks for the welcome :D

gbollard my "extraspecial" one is 4.5. I can't imagine having more than one like you do on top of that yourself. I hope that you have life a little more figured out than I do!

Being one myself actually helps. I'm able to translate for my wife.

I didn't know I was aspie until a couple of years ago. I just figured I was weird/nerd.

When the kids started behaving strangely compared to other kids, my wife used to tell me about their behaviour. I used to say - "that's not strange, I did it when I was little".

Nowadays, I use my memory to roll back those years and work out why I did things a certain way. I then apply the logic to my children's situation and - presto (well, sometimes) - instant understanding.

That said, understanding WHY doesn't always provide you with a solution.
