I'm new to the forum having only found it the other week. Decided to join up as there seemed to be some really useful stuff on here and lots of interesting people too.

I guess I should say a little about myself. I'm pretty sure I have Aspergers, although I haven't been formally diagnosed. I think I have it fairly mild compared to some.
Previously (around 2 years ago) I thought I (only) had social anxiety. I worked on that quite a bit. Took some cognitive behaviour therapy and it really helped. But then I got to a point where I didn't feel that I had SA that bad but there was still something missing. Then a friend suggested to me that I might have Aspergers syndrome as I reminded them of someone else they knew who had it. And that is how I ended up here.

My main problem is developing relationships with people. Apart from one person I don't have any friends so to speak. I feel different to almost everyone I meet. Most people who meet me, at first would describe me as 'weird'. Once they get to know me this seems to go away but even then they don't seem to 'like' me. I pretty fed up with not being liked. It wasn't always this way as at school and college I was fairly popular but I still always felt different. Now having no friends to vouch for me it seems almost impossible to get by socially :( I want to improve my social skills, learn more about myself and live my life rather than just survive it.

So I'm hoping I can do something about it, starting now :D

Just wondering...if you were fairly popular at school and college, are you sure you have AS?

Popularity is not exactly an Aspie trait. However, I was very popular in high school, just for the wrong reasons. I was in different bands as a singer, and very into the drug scenes in my younger years. Because I was an Aspie misfit in a sea of NT misfits, I didn't seem all that out of place, at least on the surface. The thing for me is how I felt, which is summed up by my location and signature.

You may have AS, you may not. Explore WP for a while, and you may get a better idea about things. Some people have very mild symptoms, while others are more severe. I think it is possible that some people have different aspects of AS more severely than other aspects, which are mild or even non-existent. There are many people who post here that know more diagnostically than I do, so I am not sure. These are just my own theories and observations.

In any case, welcome!

Welcome,

You do not have to have it all, none of us do.

We all have some, and odd mix, and no two alike.

You have the wrong place for conformity, but the right one for you.

aries, A Culture of One.

I like you.

Thanks very much everyone for your warm welcome :D

I'd just like like to say that being fairly popular at school and college might be somewhat confusing. But it was almost in spite of myself. I was pretty good at sports and that seemed enough to be popular at school :? And at college, like duncanbass also I got into the drug scene and was popular as part of that. I was in for a rude awakening though when I started working, and I've been pretty unpopular ever since!

I'm pretty sure I have aspergers as I have many of the characteristic criteria, even if I am not I'm sure I can learn a lot of stuff that will help me, and hopefully give something back in return.

Anyway thanks once again for you kind words.

Welcome aries! :)

Trying to fit in can be frustrating, I've basically switched my priorities. ;)
