I did what they said!

We don't have a lot of info. in our "community" about how to work with our kids with Aspergers. All of the schools handle them as if they're behavioral and emotionally disturbed. I'd like to see if the various groups on here can help me work better with my "little buggers" and help me advocate more knowledgably and forcefully for them.

Hope I can learn how to not be such a chucklehead with them with your help!

Beth

Yea back when i was growing up, i was bunched in with emotionally and behavioraly disturbed, along with lots of social problems, and that put me in a class of hell. It was the worst experience of my life! If i was you i would explain to the school, that yes with aspergers emotional, behavioral, social problems are very likely, but being put with just emotionally and behaviorally kids won't give the help your children really need. Heres a site that maybe you can print out and give to the schools---> http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/tc/a ... -treatment

Hope i helped alittle, by the way, welcome to wp!

Wow! You're really fast at making someone feel welcome! It's been a wild ride around here, but these kiddos of mine keep me jumpin!

Thanks for the link! My 9 yr old is in a day treatment school (therapy as part of the curriculum, but he's got a chip on his shoulder that weighs more than he does!

BUT, he's my partner in crime when it comes to being loving and being nurtured.

We're trying to get Social Skills Training for him, but there's a LONG waiting list for his age group.

At least I can bounce ideas off everyone here that have some experience with a lot of the different manifestations of Aspergers. It seems like each and every story is different (even within our own household! LOL!! !).

Beth

You got to love public education. When I was a kid, AS was not even known. I went in for so many tests and they just threw me in as "disturbed" or full blown autistic. Of course, that was absured, because I'd see kids with full blown Autism, and go "They ain't me. These doctors are wack."

So basically I didn't trust anything they told me. Schools threw me into a class with JV's, and then wondered why I had even worse behavior problems when I came out and was thrown back into mainstream classes. Basically I learned nothing on how to deal with my condition, but I learned how to steal hub-caps and beat up on people.

I'm not a victom, but I do feel very cheated about how my situation was handled. Being older now I can make sense of what was going on. Then, I didn't know why I was being treated the way I was, and why everyone seemed to be out to get me.
