I have an 11 year old son with Tourettes and NVLD(non-verbal learning disorder).I recently believe that he may have Aspergers.I am a little confused on all the possible symtems though because most of them can be explained by his Tourettes and NVLD.I know how ever that both can be a part of the Autism Spectrum.Any advice you have would be great!

Thanks in advance and nice to meet every one. :)

Hi and welcome to the Aspie community...

My 14 year old son has been diagnosed with NVLD and told has asperger traits...

Trying to get a straight diagnosis is near imposssible, but will be looking into this more, as feel NVLD is also the same as aspergers - he was told because he has an imagetion he does not have aspergers, so they diagnosed him with NVLD which does sounds about right for my son, but not sure myself why does not seem to come under ADS as so similar - will get back on this one.

Thanks every one for the welcome!

Asplanet- How old was your son when he was diagnosed with NVLD? How hard has it been to teach him? What method of teaching have you found that works the best?Sorry for all the questions.I find that as soon as I get my son to remember something he will forget something else to replace it.He still confuses breakfest, lunch and dinner. He couldn't tell you what he had for lunch 30 minutes later.Do you experience these problems with your son?

Hi tsmommy

welcome to WP.

I hear that NVLD and aspergers are closely related except for a few differences...I also know that it is not uncommon for someone on the autistic spectrum to have Tourette's Syndrome. I'm not sure of any advice I can give sorry. All I can say is, support your son no matter what.
Maybe you could ask your son if he wants to join up here...it's a great place where he could meet others like himself. Of course, just don't tell him your user-name here, he may not like it if he knew that you are writing about him!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy posting here.

My son can't spell or really read so he couldn't be on the site.I homeschool him now and we are working hard to fix this. His IQ is 73 and he still writes like he was 5.

Hi, I'm new here too. I am also new to on-line chatting so I may not know all the protocols but as Aspies we know all about that anyway :? It's great to have a forum where we can get together and be ourselves and not some mask the world wants us to wear. Having been forced to live in denial for nearly all my life, I can say truthfully that denial solves NOTHING. For the first time I am starting to feel some hope for the future, because now I am beginning to understand WHY I am having certain issues, which is the first step towards knowing how to solve them. Knowledge IS power.

My advice to tsmommy is learn, learn all you can. QUESTION AUTHORITY!! ! The doctors and the schools DO NOT always have all the answers and sometimes they have the WRONG answers. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to experiment. Support your son. Be open minded to what he may be trying to tell you.

Welcome to WP!

I'd say that one of the biggest problems with aspergers is that the symptoms are so wide and encompassing that often other problems become difficult to distinguish.

The best way to eliminate aspergers is to consider IQ. If the IQ seems normal or even above average, then the autistic condition is high-functioning-autism, which is only one very small step away from aspergers.

You would do well to post your concerns/issues into forums here and invite responses from people who have similar conditions.

Oh, and as far as the household is concerned, we all have problems imposing order and structure, but these are the best things for aspies and auties.

Good luck.
