I found this place about a couple months ago and have been lurking around.

My son was diagnosed with moderate autism when he was 2, he's going on 7 now. He's doing great in school, he has a personal aid aide, and is excelling in 1st grade academics. :D Lots of behavior issues though. He behaves about like I did at his age.

So I came across this forum, and shortly after made an appointment for myself. Today was my second appointment with a counselor. She told me towards the end of the appointment that within the first 5 minutes of our first appointment she knew I had AS. She told me her best friend since childhood has AS and she kept having to remind herself that I wasn't her sitting there.

I laughed and cried. I feel exhalted and relieved and terrified and let down. I went through years of counselling with my family back in the days before ADHD was even the thing. Spent time on psych units during my teenage years just to get diagnosed with a NOS behavioral disorder.(pre-"ADHD days") But at least now I know I am not truely evil

So here I am now. I am a mom and a wife to a very supportive husband, even though neither of us had any idea what was wrong with me back in the days when we first met lol. I haven't even told him yet what the counselor said, because he is out of town and I want to see the look on his face. 8O

Hi and welcome to the Aspie community...

Its was a big shock to me also at first, but after years of not knowing why I was different it has turned out to be the best thing ever, at last I understand and can be my true self. I was only diagnosed back in July 2007 and now my older son has been diagnosed with non verbal learning disorder...

Sounds like you're in a good place now.

Of course, there was never anything wrong with you - aspies are just built that way.

Hi medicinewoman

welcome to WP.

Just out of curiousity, are you a doctor? Just that by your username, it seems that way lol.
Anyway, check out the parents forum. There are many parents on here that i'm sure would be glad to give you advice about what to do from here...thats if you want advice.
I hope you enjoy posting here.

Welcome to Wrongplanet, medicinewoman.

I'd like to know a little more about your user name, too.
Brittany2907 thought the name suggested a medical doctor;
my first guess would be a shamaness (or female shaman)
of Amerindian origin.

No, just a lowly little LPN  I pass medicine all day long.

That and my G9 grandma was a Cherokee. In nine generations that got mixed up with a whole lot of Irish blood, but I still have always had an occasional person ask, "Are you Indian or something?"

Howdy.

There is nothing wrong with you. We might be different, but different is good. Be a pretty boring world without it.
But you got the evul part right, me too.
My wife and I are what we call, functional in our dysfunction and it works very well. Pleased to hear your home life is on the plus side of life.
The misdiagnoses are rough, been through a few myself.
Anyway, pleased you found us and welcome home.
