I know PDD NOS is akin to aspergers. Would I go by "autie" or "aspie"?

A little about me: I'm in my 20's, autistic and trying to help the outside world understand autism, not as a medical condtion to be treated or "cured" but as a way of life, and something that regardless of cause is what has helped make me part of who I am.

I feel like I am trying to be a light in a dark place oftentimes.

Welcome to WP MJIthewriter,
sounds like you're doing the right thing by trying to educate ppl about autism/AS. Not an easy thing for me to explain to ppl.

Thank you. I would link to my art as well, but I have to wait at least five days apparently, unless I misunderstood.

Another place I am active is med help. Lots of parents post there. I'm trying to help them realize autism is NOT a death sentence. Some parents think that way at first. Overall they seem to be thankful I am there to help. I also have my dad help me. He shares the perspective of a parent, while I try to share the perspective of an autistic.

It saddens me when I read about parents who try to medicate their extremely young children with meds prescribed for adults and may not be safe even for them. It's sad what misunderstandings go on. It seems people think autism should be "Cured" rather than try to fix things around the world to make living easier. Who knows, maybe it would benefit the NT's as well. Is there a way to make Walmart not such a terrible shopping experience? Maybe if they could make it not so stressful for autistics, perhaps there would be less children under 5 shrieking to the top of their lungs... Wishful thinking anyway.

I agree and I am trying to do the same and I'm also in total agreement with not medicating children, quite often its the parents that need the support! children also have rights and no one knows the long term effects yet! its fighting how many children are put on medication to control them, change them into as the NTs receive nice little children 8O

I am on a med right now (Wellbutrin 150mg). It seems to reduce some of the extremes of my mood swings. I can go from manic hyper to down in the dumps, totally raging angry into he matter of a day (or an hour).

I think meds should be used as an aid, not as a cure... About children though, they shouldn't be medicated unless it is absolutely necessary, like life threatening.

Here's my take on meds:

Can they lessen anxiety? maybe
Can they lessen depression? Maybe

Can they "cure" autism: NO.

Okay with a med, maybe I'm not omg off the edge of my seat anxious leaving the house and going into an unfamiliar setting, but I still feel clueless and feel like I am thrust out in an airport and expected to direct air traffic.

No med in the world can treat that feeling.

It's unrealistic to try to get around it.

About a really depressed autistic child: one parent was posting on a forum that their child's doctor was thinking about getting an anti depressant to help their child with their depression. The story: this child is being peed on and bullied at his school. At one point the bullies kept him locked there for an entire day.

The kid has a right to be depressed (and very angry too). To get rid of that depressed feeling is like trying to remove the pain felt when sticking a hand on a hot burner...

Sometimes we need to feel pain. Out of pain comes action.

I agree and you could say I have medicated in the pass and choose alcohol, bad choice for me. But was my way of coping at the time, and I agree if on medication during some of my worse times would of been better for me. I still get extreme mood swings and have learned to deal with them in my own way, partly I feel this is because I have backed away a lot from the pressures of the outside world, which have enabled me to do so.

Now I am not a professional and know if on the autism spectrum and also have a mental disorders it can get very complex and I know medication is a must for some. Thinking back my life would of been easier when younger if I had taken medication, but because of my mother choose not to and thats my choice. But I do ask parents of children to think very carefully and try not to see as long term, because who knows the long term effects at medication when children are still developing and children do have rights!

Here's some of my creative work:
http://thedb.com/antfolk

My obsession/facination is with insects, but they are done in a cute style. Lots of outsiders compare my work to Disney, etc, but I've been working on my characters since the fall of 1994. 1995 was when I started writing a story called Tairrena and Me. Some members of A.N.I may still remember and recognize me. I went to the 1996 Auctreat. Since then my story and the characters have really evolved.
