Hello. I found this site tonight. Very cool. I'm 24 years old. I am mildly Autistic (HFA) dx'd with Autism as a toddler and sort of grew into a higher skill level. My docs insist I'm not Aspie and finally went to a specialist that agreed I'm high-level not Asperger. The profile didn't have an option of Autism-Diagnosed only Asperger-Diagnosed so I ticked that as it seemed close enough. I'm also LD/Gifted and have features of ADHD. Hmmm. I am fairly obessed with dogs and design. I live in Amish country and love it but I grew up in a suburb of NYC. I wish I had some friends my age but not sure where to look and how. I'm also very good at card games like Poker. That is just about everything.

Welcome to the planet Autiestar! Your doctors sound confusing: I would dearly love to know how they came to conclude that you have HFA not AS: no one else seems to understand the distinction!

Amish country, isn't that where they lead fairly simple lives based on minimal technology. I watched a program on it once, and I thought it would be great if all of society was like that. No wars, no crime, no drugs, no money, just a good sense of community and a peaceful society.

Feel free to correct me if my discription is more idealistic than it is in real life, TV programs are always misleading... :)

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

I think it depends which specialist you're talking to at any given time.

Hi, welcome!

You sounded nervous when you typed your first post, but judging by your diagnosis, you will fit right in. I have been posting to this forum for over a year. I know that if you have any questions, we will try to provide the best answer that we can. We are very helpful.

If you're dx with Autistic Disorder as a child, in the US it is less likely (as, say, in Europe) to then be given a dx of Aspergers since the DSM says Autism has higher "rank" than AS and takes precedence.

There are some HFA's on here, autistar. You'll fit right in with all of us. :D :D :D

Dunno. I didn't not talk until I was 7 years old and as I understand people with AS may be delayed but not as severe as I was. I did not use sentances until I was about 9ish. I've had a few evaluations since leaving school and they all have said I'm not AS. I don't think it really matters. Thank you for the welcome.

Thank you, Robert. They are diferent "levels" of being Amish. All my neighbors are "old Amish" meaning they are what most people think of when a person says Amish. I love where I live, it is VERY laid back and quiet. I spend most of my time on 70 acres with dogs so it is very happy. Soon I will be moving into my own house nearby and have support people. I am very excited!

I live in Chester County but our land borders Lancaster County, which is Amish central for PA. We have lots of "buggy" accidents because stupid tourists speed and come rounf a bend to a SLOW buggy and can not stop. That and the "sludge" which is a variety of animal crap are the only things I do not enjoy about my corner of the world.

Welcome, Fellow Pennsylvanian! I know you've got some goooooooooooooooooooooood eatin' out in the land of hex signs and horse sludge - I've been to a couple of those family style buffets...kinda interesting when the total strangers next to you are passing you the mashed potatoes. Where does your family fall on the Amish spectrum, if there is such a thing? And does your love of design have anything to do with all those hex signs or vice-versa?

Oh, no. I am not Amish, not even a little. I'm just surrounded by them. My favorite part of being nieghbors is watching bars be raised and wragleing loose cows back to their homes. No my love for design has nothing to do with hex signs.[/i]

DSM diagnostic criteria for AS preclude a significant speech delay. This might be one of the reasons why you have been diagnosed as "not AS". I agree that it doesn't really matter. Welcome to WrongPlanet!
