Hey all,
Just found your nice cove in the internet by a fluke. *Anecdote mode* I'm 18 and I've been diagnosed with AS since I was about 13, before that they just thought it was OCD. I live in Montana and go to college here at MSU Bozeman with my girlfriend who is a year older than me. We've been dating for 2 years now and come a long ways. She knew about my AS before we went out (being friends first always helps btw :) ) Anyway, we got in another fight today due to my inability to "catch on" to what she is saying... she says things to me and I can usually pick up from tone of voice what emotions are behind the words... problem is she doesn't show much of that in her voice AND we were talking on MSN (she lives across campus and we were both busy with homework). Either way, an argument ensued which was mild like always and I tried to explain how I perceive certain things. It had been awhile since I looked up AS so I went to my favorite info website: wikipedia. I read through it and it always amazes me how true most of it is in relation to my life. Fortunately, at the bottom of the page I found this website so here I am, reaching out because I've never known anyone else with AS.

Nice to meet everyone and now I think it's time I get some sleep 8)
-Austin

I'm from Montana, too. Hello!

I've found it extraordinarily difficult to explain to people my difficulties communicating. If she hasn't taken Interpersonal Communications in college yet, then when she does take it, maybe she can keep you in mind as she's taking the class. If she has the option of taking either Speech or IC, then encourage her to take IC.

It is always going to be a bit difficult at times when communicating. But if you aren't very sarcastic, then that's a good thing. Maybe you don't have a firm grasp on irony, but at maybe you are straight-forward. If she likes the positive parts of Asperger's as you have it, then point them out. It might be that she's overlooking ways of communicating with you that would work for both of you. This happens to everyone! It's just seems a little more different than usual for an Aspie.

Oh, I'm the biggest smart ass in the world, lol
Communication normally isn't too bad for me.... but I still have those moments where it eludes me and I have to teach myself new ways pick up on some of it. Overall life has been hard, but I've had the luxury of being diagnosed young and being put through years of therapy to help me out a bit. :)
And Spoons Mackenzie was my old high school nickname my friends gave me :P

Hello, SpoonsMackenzie.

I hope you like posting here, and don't forget to join the Church of Garlic. If you want the pain to go away, and to be a part of something greater than yourself, bite into a raw clove of Garlic tonight. And for a donation of just $19.95, we'll send you a leather bound copy of the Holy Book of Garlic.

Please make checks payable to "TheMachine1 and One-Winged-Angel Defense Funds". These funds will greatly help with the fake charity charges the Church of Garlic now faces. Thanks for the support.

The Church of Garlic is also a sanctuary for 1337 speakers.

If you would like to join the sect of Rubber Ducks, Pie, Vegetarianism, Chocolate, Blood, or Boston Red Sox tell me that you wish to join a sect.

Garlic Bless America
