Hi. My name is Allison and I'm brand new to WP. I'm 28 and have AS. This is my 1st time joining an online support group that includes adults with AS. I hope I will be welcome to freely and respectfully voice my thoughts and opinions here without being bullied. In other words, I hope we can agree to disagree. I'm housebound due to the severe auditory challenges I face and really need this to work. Being shut off from the world stinks. What better place to do it than with people that share my well, what do you call autism/AS, I've been calling it a disorder and I see that it is not to be referred to as such here. I guess I'd say people who share my sameness.

I think it's usually just referred to in shorthand around here because people are generally comfortable with the label either way. You can call it a disorder or a syndrome if you want. It is what it is.

Welcome Allison, its a neurological variation not a disorder despite what outdated textbooks might say.

Hi and Welcome Allison,

What do you mean by auditory challenges?

I'm deaf myself though not too severely - I have about 25% hearing which is good 'cos usually only care about 25% of what people say (well, maybe) :D

hello Allison, i'm also 28, welcome to wp, I pretty much just call it autism or aspergers or whatever on the forum. i don't mention it to anyone else offline, cause they don't understand it. I usually say anxiety, depression etc offline.

Oh my no, Mr. Todd, I just got a haircut and I shave my own legs! But thank you for the welcome! What I mean by auditory sensitive is that my hearing is hyper-acute, the exact opposite of deafness. Many sounds are amplified for me. I absolutely cannot be around small children, dogs or fireworks. That's why I'm basically housebound. I have coping tools I use @ home, but it doesn't work when I'm right up on things in public.

Welcome Allison!

I call Asperger's ,'AS,' because it's simple and easy to write (and to say) and is less likely to offend people. :D
