Hi- the name's pocky (just like the snack sticks). Haven't received an official diagnosis, but I suspect I may have AS- well at least the online tests seem to back me up.

I'm an American living in Japan, where I teach English to adults. You might be wondering why I'd put myself through all this overseas living stuff, but I've been moving around my whole life and it's what I'm used to- I can't imagine staying put in one place. Also, at least here in Japan, because I'm a gaijin, I'm strange no matter what I do, and that can be very freeing. I love the 'increasing and imparting of my knowledge' part of my job, and I even manage to be friendly with the students. Looking back, I guess I've developed A LOT of coping mechanisms to get and stay where I am right now.

Don't know if I'll be an active poster or only a lurker... maybe I'll just be both.

Hey, welcome -- Out of curiosity, how have you been received in Japan? I've heard there's a lot of xenophobia and racism over there...

There's some, but it's mostly from older Japanese. Caucasian foreigners tend have an easier time here, more so than, say, Africans, Koreans, or Filipinos. As for my own experiences, I haven't experienced any overt prejudice (well, I don't think I have). Younger Japanese tend to be a lot more open to outside cultures- some even prefer them to their own culture. My students are always asking me about the US, and they're genuinely surprised when I tell them that Japanese culture is popular around the world, especially with anime/manga and foods like sushi.
