Hi To All!
I am "just a mom" of a little boy diagnosed on the spectrum. Cameron is non-verbal (vocally) but he speaks in so many other ways! I'm just introducing myself and hoping to learn a little bit from people that share soem of Cameron's struggles and talents. The name of this site drew me in. It does seem like he is "living on the wrong planet." Personally, I can even relate to this feeling. All my life, I have felt more in touch with things outside the physical. It was something that terrified my mom and I learned really quickly to hide those tendencies. If you want to "fit in" you often have to follow the herd. The one thing I never hid was my desire to help and change the world. Being on that "other" plane of consciousness promotes a willingness to think outside the box. I know in my heart that is why Cameron can't talk. His thinking is so different from other people that he feels we wouldn't understand, any way. I truly think he can talk (as evidenced by times he has talked to people that I can't see when he thinks nobody is watching.) Does anyone else on the forum ever communicate like this? See things or people that others can't?
Sounds like selective mutism too. He'll talk to his imaginary friends because he feels safe to do that because he trusts them and they understand him in his little world.
The best thing you can do is just be accepting until he grows out of it in some years.
This may help:

Also, get him to watch Mr.Bean, it's nonverbal so he can learn some nonverbal communication off it.
I hope you can figure it out, but remember don't push/force him if he doesn't want to, encouragement is really important but not like overly pushy encouragement. Good luck.
