Hi,
my son is 4 with a recent dx. my wife says I have Aspergers. I was writing some stuff to myself along the lines of whats wrong with normal people. the next day I read the aspergia site articles and had a laugh because it was pretty much what I wrote.
I learned that my "need to be heard and understood" is possibly hardwired. Maybe it really ISNT important to be heard or understood. And NTs have such poor skills in concentration you have to wait till they are in a good mood before you can approach them. as an aspie I need to read their signs of loss of concentration and not go beyond their comfort zone. and dont disturb them if they are watching the TV ! !! !!
Unfortunately my wife has developed a subconscious reflex to put up a barrier to communication if there is any hint of negotiation or possible conflict. she who must be obeyed. So now i have to do lots of hard work to cultivate patience and tolerance for NTs, and I have to make up lost opportunities with my wife. diplomacy is my new aspies survival tool for relationships. OMG I have to learn to shut up ! !! !! They didnt tell me growing up could be so difficult.
I think this will be excellent practise for learning how to deal with my children as they grow up.
I am a scientist, would like to save the world, but i will do my bit by discovering how to cure various diseases. I wont give any more details in case you figure out who i am when i when the Nobel prize (lol). After years of training I am now an unemployed scientist who apparently has insufficient eye contact at job interviews. This has saved me from a meaningless life in commerce or administration, but is lousy for my wifes bank account. unemployment has given me spare time to regroup my creative forces for another foray into the world of discovery. but boy I hate writing for grant applications.
Apparently I have to learn to do eye contact not too much not too little to get that job. Employer prejudice is bad enough being an aspie. Add that to being 50 and over-qualified.
I love all you smart people out there, wish there were more like you ! !! !
