Let me introduce myself. My name is Amanda; I'm 27, married, with 3 kids. Trent is my step son and has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. Logan is 6 and suffers from ASD. Presley is 1 and so far so good. I am just looking to connect with other people who are affected by autism. I have a lot of questions that someone on here may be able to help me sort out because doctors can't tell me squat.

Hi and welcome!

Your experience with doctors is very common and very many specialists such as psychiatrists and psychologists (who should know better) either know equally little or often have absurd misconceptions.

The best way forward is based upon understanding and the acceptance of difference. Remember that Aspergers Syndrome is also an expression of a different kind of personality that has inherent value. We benefit from help to develop ourselves where we are weak (typically socially) and are not 'broken mental defectives' in need of fixing.

One of the best civilised books on ASD is by Martine Delfos and I recommend that you aquire a copy to further your understanding-

Welcome to WP!

Feel free to ask any questions you want! The best place would be at the parents fourm, there is lots of info there and people to talk to.

Hi Peach welcome, I agree with you a "white coat" does not make someone an ASD expert overnight! I am also a mother and have 2 boys one diagnosed on the Autism spectrum, like myself... we both do not suffer from, but are proud and happy, even if not always understood 8O

Welcome. I'm on the other side. I'm the aspie trying to raise my 3 y/o daughter who so far seems to be NT. I'll tell you now that you are already heading in the right direction by reaching out to the ASD community rather than trying to go it alone. Take everything the doctors and other so called experts say with a grain of salt. A degree doesn't really prove much of anything.

Good luck, raising children is plenty challenging without dealing with AS/autism on top of it.

Jeff

WOW, thanks for being so inviting. I have been to other forums, but nothing as great at this! Please excuse my ignorance, I am still learning about ASD,I don't mean to offend anyone if I should say something wrong.

Us apies can come across as a little blunt, direct at first... we also do not mean anything by it, maybe a little too honest at times
