Hi,

My name is Stuart and I am 45 years of age and I live in West Yorkshire in the North of England in the U.K.

My hobbies and interests when I was a child was Natural History and Drawing. Writing (poetry and prose) became vitally important when I left school (these interests didn't manifest at school because I'm sound sensitive and also school was terrifying). Writing and Drawing has continued to the present day. I've a small amount of writing published and I'm also studying a B.A. Hons Fine Art on a part-time basis.

I'm here because the confusion I encountered on being dxd Asperger's & A.D.D. six years ago at the age of 37 seems to be 'levelling out'. The diagnosis was complicated by a memory glitch which may or may not be a part of A.D.D. The specialist described this specific part of memory and explained that it was nearly non-existent. My long-term memory is very good but is a very much a picture-memory.

I was dxd after an assessment period of twelve testing session once a week. The assessment began in 1999 and concluded in 2000.

My favourite music is the music I listen to when I'm writing and drawing and I listen to particular tracks on track-repeat because it creates a safe repetitive environment which I find soothing and also helps me concentrate. These are usually classical pieces because they help me conjure images in my mind.

My favourite books are books of artists work and other reference books. I have been writing a kind of novel for ten years now which I am perhaps writing for reassurance, because I'm pretty sure now that all the characters are on the spectrum. I usually manage a few pages a week.

I do not have a T.V. but I do watch DVD's on a player.

My family? My parents didn't seek professional advice when I was young because they couldn't work out why I was so uninvolved and yet could reel off the name of any kind of creature which was shown on T.V. My parents and my brother and sister simply hoped that that I would find order and stability when I grew older - and also that I might start talking to people and keep a job. I managed to get a few qualifications after school which persuaded them (and me too) that things were improving. The threshold of the spectrum is observable in other members of my family. My family is a very supportive and organised family.

My clothing is a tricky subject because I adapt to changes in the season very well.

I found this web-site through my research into A.S.

As for the future I would like to finish my book. I would like to continue to explore Drawing (both imagined/remembered and observed).

I live between Bradford and Huddersfield. I studied first and middle art courses in Huddersfield and then switched to Bradford for the B.A.

Two friends and I went to Manchester for an art trip recently. There are more internationally listed galleries over there than there are over here. (And the train ride isn't so long - even to Liverpool). I went to The Lowrie Centre on a college trip out and I had a white knuckle ride on one of those trams! The tram seemed to be on the pavement most of the time and pedestrians were leaping out of the way!

Hi, Stuart!

Welcome to Wrongplanet!

There have been times when I really wanted to write, but I have decided not to because I am afraid people will not know what I'm saying.

I guess it's just an AS trait.

I'm really glad there are other people. When I was young I just about lived in Natural History encyclopeadias. I can still see the pages in my head. What I didn't have was an encyclopedia of people - that would have been really useful.

Thankyou. It's much easier to reply to a forum in a site called Wrong Planet than some site or other called Medical...something or other. I've stared at a lot of sites like those.

Thank you. When I left school my favourite artists were those called Surrealists (they sort of have a thing about dreams and try to paint them). Marc Chagall is one of those I have to write a long essay about. My favourite Chagall is "Bouquet with Flying Lovers". I really like drawing though - charcoal and white chalk. I like pictures that try to tell a story.

Thank you Larsen,

It's really hard to make sense. I think the hardest type of writing is the "I kind" ('I looked out og my window and...') because It's sort of narrow. I prefer the 'He, she, they, type' because I can wander off and try to describe the building or the area or something. I just write a tiny bit and keep changing it until it matches little pictures which come into my head. If I don't change around things a lot then it doesn't match and it makes me feel unhappy because the picture I'm trying to build with words isn't right. My characters aren't great talkers but I keep them thinking about times past in their lives because they don't talk very well. I make sure they can all see and smell and touch and taste things and also remember things (a lot better than I can).

Thank you,

For me it's been six years since dx. The art classes have really helped because if I cancan create something then that something can do the communicating for me. Maybe the writing is doing that but it's not a public thing, writing's an internal thing. Art classes worked because art tutors know about the 'edge of society'. I went to the beginner art class and found there wasn't a great crowd there. After that class I went to a more advanced one where there were more people and the tutor told us all: 'The ones who will do well here will be the true obsessives." (That's when I knew I would be fine.) [Believe me when I say that an Asperger focus leaves every other kind of obsession standing still].

Hi, that's a cool painting!

I don't have a favorite artist, I like a lot! You name it: Dalí, Picasso, Monet, Manet, Matisse, Kandinsky, Juan Gris, Duchamp. Picabia, Magritte, Miró, Giacomo Balla, Cezanne, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin, Seurat, Van Gogh, Lautrec, Bracque, Goya, Ingres, Macke, Velázquez, Munch
phew! long list, had to look for what I had in My Pictures folder :P

(to be honest my fave one is Jules Cheret, "the father of the poster" for bringing art to the masses)

That's cool man, now that makes us two obsessives :)
