Figured I should get involved with an Autism forum, normal folk have a hard time understanding various things I may feel the need to vent about occasionally.
I'm 25 and I live in Washington State, USA. I've had multiple diagnoses in the past. The first place I went was kind of a joke and they just insta-labeled me Aspergers, which was a bit fishy, I think they just wanted clients. The second place was a specialist which I saw a few times before joining his group session of Asperger folk. I felt more comfortable with his diagnoses of Aspergers + X. The last place I went was kind of intense. I went through a full day of various mental tests and the diagnosis I got was basically "we've got no f*****g clue." The only thing they could say for sure was that I was not ADHD, I guess because I was a pro at remembering faces. They said I displayed many symptoms of high-functioning autism, but were hesitant to label is Aspergers.
I suppose a self-diagnosis is called for here. I would say I have OCD, depression, some sort of anxiety disorder and a hint of autism. And insomnia. It's super awesome.
I suppose I could count myself lucky among my fellow odd individuals. A lot of people have their specific interests/obsessions dealing with something that doesn't help them support themselves. My particular interest/obsession is mental games. This naturally led me to poker and I've been able to support myself very comfortably as a result. This works great for my insomnia, allowing me to have a somewhat free-form sleep schedule if I so choose (as it happens, I've actually been on a healthy sleep schedule for months now with just one 3-day session of insomnia).
I haven't taken any sort of medication for years, but I smoke a lot of marijuana. Make of that whatever you like, but I find it works wonders for my OCD/anxiety. It also takes the edge off when I've had a day of running bad at poker.
As for other random interests, I listen to a lot of music, but mostly old punk music from the 70/80s along with classic Jamaican ska, I also like a lot of 50/60s rock/soul/blues. I read a lot, but mostly nonfiction, lots of political stuff (I'm a Libertarian). I collect classic video games, mostly Nintendo/Super Nintendo, but I've got a lot of stuff for Atari and various other systems. And I don't just collect this stuff, I put it good use on a regular basis. Me and a buddy of mine are even planning quarterly classic video game tournaments for our friends. Finally, I also watch a lot of movies, generally of an obscure or odd nature. I love horror movies and specifically zombie films as well as a lot of Asian/French random wtf movies.
So that's me. Hi there.
