How often do you engage in histrionics? Histrionics are over-the-top emotional displays that often become self-caricaturing. The key point is that they are emotion-laden responses to things that don't normally evoke much emotion, exaggerated in response level, and often not in agreement with the true nature of the emotions felt by the person displaying the histrionics. Another but deprecated term for this is hysterics, which discriminates against women since it comes from a Greek word for womb.
