Hi MrsWoman and welcome to the wrongplanet. I am sure you will find this site to be helpful to you and with the issues involving your son. Asperger's/HFA is a condition I consider to be a gift. In order to use the gift, we must accept it. It sounds like your son is doing well in school, so he should be able to use this gift to his advantage.
I am a gifted intervention specialist at a public high school, and I have Asperger's. I have always regarded my eccentric behavior and interests as a gift to me. I would not want to get rid of my Asperger's if there was a magic pill that could turn me into a NT. I had very supportive parents, and it sounds like you are great support for your son---that is so important.
You will find a lot of discussion and debates in the wrongplanet regarding our views on cures/placement on the autistic spectrum/etc. Many times, we argue amongst ourselves over these issues. This is what can make this site so informative and interesting. I have learned a great deal from this site on understanding myself.
I believe there is no cure for Asperger's because it is a form of autism, and autism is just another way a human being's mind can be wired. You, as a NT, are wired differently than us. And as we know, there are more people wired like NTs on this planet than the way we autistics are wired. So one of my big statements has always been for tolerance. NTs should tolerate Aspies, and Aspies should tolerate NTs. But in order to tolerate, we all must respect each other.
I wish your son all the luck he deserves in his schooling. It sounds like he has great start. He will someday thank you for the support you are giving him. Enjoy this site.
