Hi,
I've been diagnosed with social phobia, I'm taking ssri's and they've really helped with my anxiety. I've begun feeling that there's something more than anxiety involved though - even when I can talk to people, I feel as though we're on entirely different wavelengths. I didn't think of Asperger's until I took the AQ test (for fun); I'm bad at taking tests and I don't think the score counts for much anyway. It was a little high though, which made me wonder.

I guess I might as well ask ...
Is there any point in being diagnosed? Would this just be another label? Standard SP treatments definitely help with the anxiety, which is my main problem anyway.
How would I get diagnosed? Would I ask my psychiatrist? Psychologist? Wouldn't they just laugh in my face? (I'm 18.)

And lots more questions, but I have a splitting headache and rather think I'll save them for later.

What's the point of a diagnosis?

Relief and understanding.

Relief in knowing that my "weirdness" is actually something beyond my control, and the understanding of why I am the way that I am. Now I know better what situations to avoid, and which activities actually benefit from my Aspieness.

It's not a label if no one else knows about it.

Yes, a diagnosis would require a mental health professional, preferable one specializing in Autistic Spectrum Disorders..

Hi Chocolate. They wouldn't laugh at you. I was diagnosed last November at the age of 44. I have always known I was different and had issues---so the diagnosis has given me a huge sense of relief---I finally know who I am after all these years. For that reason, I find it important if you feel like you would like to know. Some people however do not want to know. You can search online for a specialist in your area. A psychiatrist, psychologist, or master social worker, can diagnose you. Good luck to you and welcome to the wrongplanet.
