Hi there everyone

I am mum to a a great little guy, who was diagnosed last year with Aspergers. We, as a family are particularly eccentric (typical Brits really, sorry chaps) - so we thought our son was too! That's until we incurred the wrath of the demon teaching assistant - who when I complained, yet again, that some little pillock had my boy in a headlock and was therefore a bit of an old bully, was told (very bluntly) "oh, have you ever considered Kenny might be autistic". As you can imagine, this sort of took the wind out of our sails - and for a long time were very concerned. Now we know he just has Aspergers, and therefore is rather special. Can anyone give me any hints that may help to help Kenny in the coming years? Any tips? Anyone??! !? Cheers mate.

Hi SarniaExpat - welcome to WP!

Something that helped me - especially with bullies - when I was growing up, is learning to make eye contact (it's about dominance - bullies take lack of eye contact as a sign of weakness.)

Whatever you do - don't force your son to make eye contact. But, if he understands the value of learning that skill, he may be encouraged to try it on his own. And he shouldn't be discouraged if he doesn't succeed right away - it's a difficult thing & may even hurt at first. But I can definitely say that it is the most useful social skill I ever learned.

Thanks guys - nice to make your acquaintance. Will pass on your comments re eye contact - Kenny has a double whammy - in that he is also tall for his age and has red hair. In England this is seen as a negative, not as I think a definate positive.... never mind, onwards and upwards!
