Hi, my name is Kara. Just recently diagnosed AS after many years of misdiagnosis, school problems (due to severe boredom and bullying), and the usual stuff. I'm lucky to have family and 2 very close friends also diagnosed AS so I have some support, but am having some issues with NT's either a) misunderstanding what it means to have Aspergers (They seem to think that Autism always means rocking and zero communication) or b) being told that my "problems" are in my head (My fiances psychologist father gave me quite the lecture last night about how he understands that I am angry at humanity which is why I don't have social skills, and thinking in pictures and synesthesia are definate signs of schizophrenia and I probably got "misdiagnosed. I recommended the DSM-IV as the next book he reads, but he pretended to not hear me.)
Has anyone else had these sorts of problems, and how do you handle them?

Glad to be here!

Kara

Welcome to the Wrong Planet neighborhood, Kara. I think you'll find that you have many things in common with the good folks on WP. I think you may also find that more people here have been "misdiagnosed" with schizophrenia that you can shake a psychologist at. All the WP best to you.

Hi Kara and welcome to the WrongPlanet. You know, so many people (professionals alike) are so misinformed about autism. I got my official diagnosis last November just after my 44th birthday---now all the puzzle pieces of my life seem to fit. I think when you see the criteria stare back at you like a mirror you know it is you---you have AS.

It took awhile for my mother to accept I had autism. She always thought of me as perfect. But I explained that autism is not a disorder, but a difference. That is how many of us here see it. She is now fine with it.

As for your fiance's psychologist father---it sounds like he needs to reeducate himself on autism. That was not right of him to lecture you then not listen to you. That should show his lack of knowledge on the subject.

You will find us supportive here on the WrongPlanet. I have found that the advice I get on here is much more valuable than what you can get elsewhere---though I do have a wonderful therapist that helps me with some family relation issues.

Anytime you need some help/advice, don't hesitate to ask us. We are all here for each other. And I am sure you can help us too in our times of need. Enjoy the site.
