Sorry if this post is unwelcome just please delete it and my account, hi my name is Aura, until recently waas diagnosed as a dyspraxic, until a specialist took another look at my records and realised the diagnosis was incorrect. Am currently awaiting an appointment for an asessment for aspergers syndrome and thought maybe the people here could explain it to me a little. will post on the main board later, Amyway maybe I should introduce myself, I am a 24 year old transperson, I tend to spend most of my time collecting and studying weapons of all different types, and building and maintaining computers. I only do that as a hobby though not a career. So that's about it really, pleased to meet you all.

Hi unchainedaura - welcome to WP!

The more you read the posts on this forum, the more you will learn about AS. Since it's a *spectrum* disorder, everyone's story is going to be a little different. (That's also one reason why I've found this to be such a welcoming environment.)

One really great resource that a lot of us have used as a pre-diagnostic tool (and some certainly have used it in lieu of a professional Dx), is the Aspie Quiz - http://rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php - I think it can be a pretty valid indicator.

Best of luck in your search for enlightenment!

Well just took the test, first time got the following results
Your Aspie score: 187 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 12 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie
one supposes that answers that enquiry, will just await the asessment for final confirmation.

I laughed when the psychologist handed that test to me when I went for evaluation. I got the same score then as I did the first time. I don't know what I thought he was going to say, (hey, congratulations, you really aced that Aspie test, dude!) because the fact I was Asperger's Syndrome didn't concern him much. Didn't concern my subsequent therapist, either.

I think it was because they
A. didn't know much about it, or
B. knew they could do nothing for it.

My God-daughter has a global dyspraxia diagnosis. Comparing her to people I know with an AS diagnosis, I would differentiate on the basis that she is more socially innocent than clumsy, has greater problems with planning/learning, and seems to be less in need of routine, developed intense interests much later and is characterized by greater flexibility.

She (my God-daughter) is more empathetic, and needed less assistance to learn non-verbal social communication skills (by the time she hit her teens she could mimic eye contact behavior very well, whereas I was in my 20s before I even started to be able to consistently look at peoples' eyes, and in my 30s by the time I understood that simply looking at someone's eyes fixedly is just as problematic as never looking there, and I still struggle and am somewhat less than reliable in my ability to mimic eye-contact behavior). She also has been less socially isolated/excluded, and seems to have the hang of making and keeping friends.

My God-daughter also did not have the same stereotyped intense interests associated with AS when she was younger (although she started to manifest such interests as she entered into her pre-teens).

She also really struggles with learning physical tasks. She is less "clumsy" than I am, when moving around and manipulating her environment, but she is very challenged in learning physical tasks (such as throwing a ball, riding a bike). Once she has learned a physical task she seems no more clumsy at performing it than average.

I hope this comparison has been helpful. Also, welcome to WP.
