Hi.

I never know how to begin introductions, so anyway here goes.

I have not been diagnosed AS, neither have I gone for any diagnosis.
Mostly I just avoid the entire medical profession as far as possible.
But, from what I can tell, if I am not AS then I do seem to share a LOT of the characteristics.
Currently I am reading "The complete guide to Asperger's syndrome" and so far nearly every page has something I can identify with or after some thought makes me realise the significance of something I had not even noticed as unusual as that is simply the way things worked for me and I had never realised that not everybody experienced things that way.

All I really know is that I don't think anybody would ever have accused me of being NT in my life, but mostly I have gotten by on the "highly intelligent people often are a bit strange socially" ticket.

In an attempt to find some understanding of why I am having difficulty I recently did a pshycological screening test that showed a result of "clinically significant" for Asperger's. That meant it was time to find out more about AS and I also ended up taking the AQ test.

I have trouble with eye contact, can barely cope with keeping track of conversation with one person and have real trouble focusing on anything other than my current obsession. I also have a number of other "unusual" traits but most of these I think I keep under control when people are around, except that other people usually don't seem to be able to decide what to make of me or to understand my intentions. At least it appears that my occupation is well suited to AS characteristics and is probably partly why I have been able to get by so far (Academic and IT seems a workable combination so far).

Oh, and by the way I got a score of 41 on the AQ screening test for whatever that is worth.

Hmmm, best stop it there.

Hi JadedMantis - welcome to WP!

I think your story is representative of a lot of us who were either diagnosed later in life, or remain undiagnosed (but nevertheless certain of having AS.) Tony Attwood's book is a great place to start, by the way.

I look forward to hearing more from you here on WP!

I do this too, but mostly because I live in the US and have no medical insurance.

Well, your story is well known here. You should fit right in. Hope you enjoy yourself.

I have an aversion to the medical profession too, or any profession that would seek to analyze and judge me, for that matter, as well as any dealings with bureaucracy and government. I'd much prefer to simply live off the grid entirely. I'm afraid of one of two things happening if I go in for medical/psychological evaluation. They'll either tell me that I'm completely insane with some problem that I know I don't actually have and lock me up against my will, or they'll tell me that I'm completely normal and am just full of myself for thinking otherwise, both of which are equally undesirable outcomes to me.
