hi there,
i hope i'm not in the 'wrong' place, but i'm a mum of son with Kanner autism. low functioning, he also has many health problems, epilepy, IBS. What i'm here for is i also run a charity autism . independent uk. i'm interested in views of people on the asd spectrum who can speak for themselves and share their experiences. From what i've read on this site so far is that most of you are high functioning, understanding language etc. However i'm interested to learn what difficulties you experience in the atypical world. Sensory issues for instance? i know my son is a million miles away from you guys but lets face it, we've learned mostly from people who 'can' verbalise. So what difficulties do you experience in the Atypical world? What annoys or upsets you most? Do you consider yourselves 'handicapped/disabled'? From what i've read and seen on this site i'd be hard pushed to say you even have a disabilty, posts are very eloquent. Do you agree that autistic/asperger individuals are often tarnished with the same brush, i'm thinking now of news items that centre on the negative aspects like arson, stalking
the uni bomber etc? Do you think that more individualistaion of autism/aspergers needs a voice, diagnosis even?, To seperate the the 'dangerous' from the 'unusual' shall i say?
i've had contact with many people with asd and it is amazing how different responses are, some are very much into my mode of questioning and respond accordingly, others seem to take offence, where none is intended, it speaks volumes to me of the diversity of this condition, which sadly is missed by, in my experience, so called professionals.
that's all for now,
awaiting responses
Pam
