And how is talking about a conversation that happened in wrongplanet on another chat room not a breach of privacy?

I've had a change of heart with regards to jackie31337, she helped me out with something today so I guess she's still a good op

See, that is the problem, the operators are there to make the place a safe place for as many people as they can, that often involves enforcing rules (like I noticed memzy got banned for being asked not to use the f word, and then saying it and other swear words consistently afterwards just to annoy the op, we have kids under 10 in the channel some times, it is not something that should go on there!)

The ops have a job to do, and many times, that involves doing things others don't like. Judge them on how well they are doing their job, NOT on how much you like them.

Discussing something from a private message (or private chat for that matter) would be a breach of privacy, but if you mention something that happens in a public chat in another public chat, that is in no way a breach of privacy. It happens a lot in the world of IRC. Remember, the WP chat is publicly accessible from this website, and is publically accessible through a /list on the freenode irc network. Were the WP chat set to mode +s and only accessible on this website to logged-in members, that would be a different story, but as of right now, nothing that is said in the public chat is private. If you don't want something repeated, say it in a private message.

HCTR: That means that it wasn't a breach of privacy if you said it in a public chat (which I believe that other chat which shall go unnamed here is public).

Mortomes: Talking about a conversation that happened in #wrongplanet in any other irc chat is not a breach of privacy either.

Just remember everyone, what you say in public (whether in real life, on a blog, in a chat, on a "social" website) is seen by many others. It doesn't make sense to make an issue out of someone repeating something that they heard publicly, at least it doesn't to me.

Exactly Alex. There is no way to consider anything said in a public chat that generally has between 60-80 users at a time to be private. It just isn't possible. If someone repeats of pastes something into another chat, there is nothing to stop them, and there are no ethics that have been violated in doing so.

Well, that's barely a thing for a chat that is doing its best to be family friendly anyway.

Uummm, the channel banlist was FULL, so taggard put memzy in the autoremove/banned user list in chanserv, to free up space, so that other trolls who make trouble can be removed

If you bother to check the autoremove list, you'll see 32 entries there, INCLUDING memzy. Those entries are there because there is NOT enough space in the ban list to handle them all, and the ops made multiple request for an extended ban list to IRCops which have been deined, in part because alex, as channel owner, did not request and did not confirm that we needed it when asked.

Please don't complain about ops in the channel doing the best they can to make sure they can deal with trolls, chanserv is down about a hour a month, and the ops know who is banned and will deal with the banned users as best they can if they come in when it is down.

IF you want to complain, please complain to Alex about his NOT helping when the channel ops have requested longer ban list permissions!

EDIT: pikachu deleted his post above, here is the post that this was in reply to

I request Taggard is removed from the ops list, he is totally incompetent and unbanned a known troublemaker (memzy) and I have the proof

[21:25] * Taggard sets mode: -bbbb *!*@*69-251* *!*cf772baf*@* memzy!*@* *!*@*dyn.centurytel.net
<< from my IRC logs
need I say more, he's incompetent, chanserv's autorem doesn't work if chanserv should go down for some reason

go see the ircops

while you are about, can you confirm that the autorem list contains the said entry (memzy) because right now I do not trust Bateau because he's been acting like a total jerk towards me and as I'm not an op I do not have access to autorem

ok, I now have a genuine complaint about one of the ops

Specifically Taggard

PM me if you want to know, because I cannot paste logs here as this is public (despite the incident happening in a public chat room)

Either my IP floats around or IP bans aren't permanent, or something like that.

No, thye just don't do perma-bans as a rule of thumb, most bans are lifted within a few hours to a day unless you've really trolled the place. They can only ban 50 people because of the limited size of the ban list, and with people using CGI and the mods not having access to that, though they said Alex said he'd get them access, they are only able to preoperly ban 25 IP masks, as they must ban both CGI and the normal reverse-dns if the troll is smart enough to use both cgi and java or another method.

25 bans for a channel that has over 300 regular users.... yeah, pity the ops, they can't fit even a small part of us in the ban list.
