Can we have a thread stickied or a seperate section created as a memorial to those in our community that have died due to injustice?

So many suicide
or die through "interventions" while being restrained for example
are murdered by bullies or ignorant preditors
or subject to medical negligence or cruel procedures
have been put to death by governments that do not value neuro diversity

I would like to start such a thread but don't want to see it lost in the pile
I think it would be very powerfull both to the families who have lost someone but also as a tool for change.

I did pm a mod about this but then I saw this section so I am reiterating here.

I don't understand what you mean by "put to death" as the only people put to death by government are convicted murderers, which has nothing to do with neurodiversity.

The understanding in most civilized nations is that someone who is ret*d is not capable of adult criminal action.

The US has a history of executing "criminals" who are mentally ill or ret*d.

The Nazis put to death mentally ill people which would have included autistics.

China, Iran, Saudie Arabia, Nigeria and Pakistan and Yeman curently execute ret*d people.

Many children die while subject to "interventions" - example : suffocate while under restraints - this happens in countries such as Canada, England and the US

I think these people should be remembered.

While I am strongly opposed to the death penalty, that is a political hot potato I personally think this forum needs to stay clear of.

I'm not suggesting opening up a debate on that just a place to remember people who have died

I don't think the "cemetary" should be a place for debate or support disscussion - but rather a record of names and how they died

While that is a topic of debate worthy in PPR I think sticking something so political on a support forum is inappropriate.

Yeah like I said I don't think it should be a support thread - just a record, a memorial to all the autists who have died from various injustices - please don't get hung up on one point . . .

Sorry I'm Canadian, I didn't think it was controversial, it seemed like a no brainer to me (maybe my cultural bias in part) - but since the US stopped doing this in 2002 - they have recognised as a nation that it was injustice.

but that aside shouldn't we have a place to remember those who have suicided, or died from cruel "interventions" or have been murdered by bullies and ignorant preditors?

I don't think anyone would argue that the number of autistic people who die due to ignorance and lack of appropriate supports is far too many but nobody tracks this information

they are just forgotten when the news articals get old.

This is copied from another thread :

Gabriel Poirier 9 years old , died : 4/17/08
Hautes-Rivieres School
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec

53-pound Gabriel, an autistic boy with special needs, died under under a blanket at Hautes-Rivieres School. His parents were initially told he was hiding under the blanket. A coroner revealed that Gabriel's teachers had tightly wrapped him in the blanket, leaving only the tips of his ears sticking out, as punishment when he became disruptive. They left him unsupervised in a corner for 20 minutes, returning when a timer sounded.

Also:

Garrett Halsey 16 years old (died : 12/23/04)
Grafton School Inc., Grafton group home

Autistic and mentally ret*d boy died while he was restrained by 6 people who sat on his back. This occurred on his second day at the group home.

and :

Michael R. Lewis, III 15 years old (died : 8/25/2003)
Parchment High

On the first day of school, this autistic child was restrained on his stomach by six employees. He was dead within two hours.

and:

Raymond Lee Mitchell 21 years old (died : 7/19/2006)
Home in Riverside County, CA

Autistic young man threw a temper tantrum. His mother called the police who she feels escalated, rather than de-escalated, the situation. Ultimately, she saw 6 grown men on top of her son as they restrained him.

I just think it is so sad and should not be ignored

and i thought this was going to be a thread about WP members who have passed, and how there should be a memorial forum specifically for these people.

That's what I thought too.

Anyway, I could see some issues with this. For one thing, you've got the problem of retroactive diagnosing. All of the examples you were posted were of people who were legitimately diagnosed (as far as I know anyway; I skimmed it), but I'm sure that at some point someone would want to post a case of someone who might have had it or might not have had it. There will be debates on who does and does not qualify.

For another thing, I feel like this would foster an us against them mentality. Yes, sometimes people who are autistic (or have other disabilities) are killed by someone who's neurotypical. On the flip side of the coin, sometimes people who have a disability kill people who are neurotypical. Sometimes, people kill each other even though they have the same disorder (or lack thereof). Recording every injustice against a certain group almost seems like it will eventually lead to at least hate, if not more. People who may be depressed might see it as proof that it's hopeless.

I just feel like it could get really messy really fast.

These people were all autistic

I agree it would be particularily special for wrong planet people that had died due to injustice.

I don't think the retroactive diagnosing if it came up occasionally would be a big deal - If you want to remember somebodies death who am I to call you down?

I don't think it should be a place for debate at all - just a place to give their name, when they died how they died and maybe a few touching words.

Who goes to a cemetary to argue about weather somone's loved one belongs there of not?
I don't think memorials are the cause for people's depression - that doesn't really happen . . . people are already depressed about themselves, they don't go to cemetaries to get ideas.

I don't see how remembering the dead fosters hate - if anything keeping silent about their deaths promotes hate.

I geusse I was wrong - another bad idea that nobody else gets . . . maybe I should take the advice from wrong planet people and go put a bullet in my head . . . no-one would notice or care either way.

nonszot, I don't think you are wrong. I think the comments suggest rewording, and maybe more limited wording, but not abandonment. You keep it simple, and you keep words that might have a political spark out of it.

You might say in the first post, "This thread is memory of those with Autism and related conditions who have died before their time."

Then you provide a suggested format that is very simple, maybe

Name
Date of birth
Date of death
Cause of death
Further information, if appropriate or available (link)

To me, memorials are very personal things. As such, discussion and politics and anything that would invite moments beyond simple reflection don't belong. But, if you keep it simple and clean, I think you are right, it could be powerful.

There is one blog someone has and he or she has a page of all the autistics that have died. The year they were born, their death and how they died.

I think this a good idea... at least when for members of this forum. I think it might get a bit overwhelming with happenings from everywhere in the world, though... I think it may be very depressing for some people with all that information available. But in remembrance of members of this forum, at least, I find it to be a very good idea. I think that especially for those who commit suicide, their last wish is usually to at least be remembered, even if only by the forum name they used, and the posts they made. Of course, in the case of a lacking real name, it'd be the problem of preventing the postings of faked deaths, which does tend to happen, at times... I suppose in that case, a friend on the forum would have to confirm what happened.... hmm. :l
