I'm just about at that point...

Normally ads don't really bother me much, but that ADHD kid jumping around is too much :x

There's ads on this website?

...

Seriously, get a web browser with an add-on that will block ads. It improves the quality of browsing. :P

I use an adblocker, too, and have done for so long that I had forgotten about ads.

I don't understand how annoying ads can be effective. The point of an advertisement is to try to get you to buy a certain product or use a certain business. If an ad distracts me from what I'm reading, by flashing, moving, or being in my way, I try my best not to read it. If I happen to see what the product or business is, I make a point of not buying it. I don't want to support a business that treats me with disrespect.

It's just like if both of my kids wanted to tell me something, and one spoke calmly and politely, while the other got right in my face and started whining and poking me. I would refuse to listen the the obnoxious one, and maybe send him away, but I would give my attention to the polite one.

Apparently that kind of advertising works, though, or there wouldn't be so much of it. People are strange.

I used to wonder about that too, and I like to blacklist providers who use any kind of aggression in their advertising. But the trouble comes in remembering who's on the list (which gets quite long if I apply high standards), and even if I can remember, if it's otherwise a significantly better deal than I'd get from their nearest competitor, I may be economically driven to hold my nose and buy from the rude supplier. It can be expensive to hold onto a principle. And if somebody as fundamentalist as I can have difficulty in boycotting the offenders, those who don't hate ads quite so much must find it even more difficult. I suppose that's how annoying ads can be effective.

Why can't we have something like that here?

My adblocker on IE is working, but sometimes I will get just a split-second of an ad trying to come on.

It gets annoying! I can barely concentrate because of it, and it just plain annoys me!

Well, WP Supporters should have site ad-free. Regular members would still have to see the ads though, otherwise Alex won;t be getting any revenue to keep the site up.

Is it actually an ad? When I open a WP page, I briefly see a couple of photos of people's heads, which could be members' avatars, only I don't see them on the page once it's opened. It all happens so quickly that I can't be sure what it is.........I think I'll try to capture it with the "print screen" key - hitting that copies the screen to the clipboard, from which it can be pasted into a picture editor. Assuming I can hit the key at the right time.

It worked......the pictures and text I see are pretty much what I'd see if I clicked on the blue bars at the top of the General Autism Discussion page.......i.e. "Autism Talk Episode 10" and "Acceptance: it doesn't mean giving up...." the pictures aren't avatars, they're small photos of Robert Naseef and a guy who interviewed Lindsay Oberman. So in my case, they don't seem to be ads at all, just a minor glitch as Firefox draws the page on the screen.

When I'm at work, I tend to read WP on my lunch-hour and we're not allowed to use anything other than IE. And if there is an ad-blocker for that, we'd not be allowed to install it. :(

The adds do drive me nuts - even if you could just gtet them to stay still or something - I can mentally block out "junk" at the side, but things jumping and moving and spinning drive me slightly crazy. :(

IE8 has a built-in ad blocker! It is not called ad blocker because if it were so obvious dozens of advertizers would sue Microsoft. Lawyers tend to follow the money.

Blocker is called 'InPrivate Filtering'. Turn it on!

That doesn't block all the ads - it just says it stops the people behind the ads from collecting data from you.

I can't see the one down the side anymove, but I can still see the one at the top of the WP website... A weight-watchers online one with stupid moving arrows etc. :(

For anyone who uses Internet Explorer or who doesn't want Alex to lose revenue for Wrong Planet by blocking the advert I've made an alternative. A simple resizeable program window that acts like a bit of sticky paper you can place over the top of the browser window where adverts appear to hide them.

I can email a copy of the tiny program to anyone who wants a copy. It will work on Windows XP, Vista and should work on Windows 7 too. There is no installer. Simply run the program and drag the window over the top of the offending adverts on the left side of the screen. Send me a PM with your email address if you want a copy of the program. It is free.

I got the idea from Leejosepho who has stuck a bit of paper to his screen to hide the annoying advert!

I don't like to block ads and wouldn't if they didn't interfer with my browser (because I know they help pay for the site) but ads on this website do, so I must block them. Thanks for providing these links for ad blockers!

Just what I'd expect from Internet Explorer. Please don't be afraid of Firefox (unless you're on a Mac)......it's very easy to install and use - the ad-blocker is a bit of bother but I think there's everything you need to know about running that, in this very thread. You can still keep Internet Explorer and use it whenever you like. Personally I wouldn't use Firefox for internet banking, but that's only because I don't know how good its security is, compared with Micro$oft. Probably just as good, and possibly better, but I don't know. The security settings don't look as comprehensive.

One nice thing I just noticed about Firefox - I was typing a post when my laptop screen went green.....it's always done that, since before I ever tried Firefox......anyway I had to do a hard reset, and I was glad to find that Firefox had preserved my post, so I was able to just carry on typing. 8) For some reason it put the previous posts in the advert space to the left of the page, but the post submitted fine.

Hello...this is new - the General Autism Discussion page now has an "ad" at the top of the page, so that I have to scroll some way down the page before I can see the list of topics. It's those 2 long horizontal (blue) bars at the top of the screen - they've been there for some time but now one of them is open by default. Adblock Plus doesn't see it as an ad, so it won't block it.

Whether they're truly ads or not is debatable. It's invasive, and practically the whole thing is written in ad-speak. Don't know whether it's just that which puts me off, but I don't see anything in there of the slightest interest to me. I don't want to be America's top model of the month.

I think I'll avoid that page as much as possible in future.

Hello

I know this thread is a necro before anyone says but I think it is the most relevant place to ask

Does anyone know which AD blocking add ons for Firefox and Chrome are most effective?

I would ask about Internet Explorer but I try not to use that. I don't think Alex would lose any money if individual users block the ads which appear, I found a few useful websites clicking on ads generated from my search terms in Google eg possibly Wrong planet when searching for information about Asperger's and another forum I use.

Personally the ads don't tend to bother me unless they are talking about the occult or something dangerous eg certain metal chelation products*

*[Chelation can cause many problems - http://www.livestrong.com/article/12885 ... ion-risks/ the one that I knew about was a case of fatal arrhythmias] - Seek specialist medical advice if you are wanting to take/receive chelation.

Other question, do all adverts need to be clicked on to generate revenue for the web host [ie is the revenue generated by the click through rate always or are there some which generate revenue irregardless]
