I can't get the chat working... What do I do wrong?
Or is now one jusing it?

No idea. The chat is nothing to do with this site as far as I'm aware.

Point your browser at http://webchat.freenode.net/ and enter the your nickname, then the channel name as #wrongplanet

But - please remember that the IRC chatroom is not a part of the Wrong Planet support system and operates in a different way, and also that the channel ops are effectively the moderators on #wrongplanet - us WP moderators have no jurisdiction there.

It IS a part of wrongplanet.net, ultimately Alex is in charge of both.

IRC is totally open: whoever creates the channel, owns it.

Alex *is* the registered owner of the channel.

However, I'd agree that the two mediums are not part of the same community. They both serve very different purposes, and have completely different organizations supporting them, which was the point you were trying to make anyway.

Ah, beg pardon... There is clearly more to channel ownership than I understood, and IRC isn't quite as anarchic as I thought.

I've been on the chat for over a year now and I grew to realize that new op's should be installed, the current situation made many people run away to new channels. Not so cool.

what do you mean by that... from my perspective things have been much smoother sailing than normal in the past few months, haven't been any raids from 4chan et al for a very long time. I haven't had to deal with any issues among regulars for ages... everyone's been peaceful

Well he is the registered owner, but he pretty much doesn't take as much of an active involvement in the wrongplanet IRC. Least not from what I've seen. Though he does have the rights to make decisions as owner if he ever wanted to. Nobody really has complete say over anything wrongplanet related except for Alex from my understanding.
