I'm getting a lot (up to 50% of all the pages I open) of video ads browsing the site (all sorts of different products - the most recent one was for Vanish carpet cleaner). It makes iPhone browsing a pain because the video player loads up every time, and also it won't allow music to play as long as I'm on that page.

I am in the UK if that makes a difference.

There are a couple of threads earlier in this forum about both the video and sound ads.
They certainly aren't a popular addition to the site and I understand the issue is being investigated.

I'd like to see a control panal like VBulletin has for their forums.

I'd like to see discussion groups to join for special interests.

I'd like to see an icon for "you have posted in this thread".

I'd like to see a system where you can have friends.

I'd like a visitor message system for profiles, and more for the profile pages.

I'd like a "views" catagory to show how many times each post has been read.

I'd still like to see a rep here even though some people might get upset over it. It would be very helpful, especially for new users, to know whose comments to give more weight to and whose advice is thought to be generally good.

Alex is working on the new software and hopefully this new software will cover some of the things that you mention(several smaller forums are doing it hopefully he´ll catch up with them).

As for the rep thing: I have nothing against it but there are several members that will have something against it because according to them its just going to become another way of broadcasting your poppularity yadda yadda.
Did you see this nice idea ?http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt191004.html. Anyone gets a chance to introduce themselves to the community in a detailed manner if they wish and if you arent interested dont sign up for it.

Sounds like a good thing right?, wrong. Apparently this is just an undercover operation that is going to bring more popularity to members that are already popular(even though most of this so called popular members have started posting elsewhere due to video ads...)

Dont see how the number of visitors would be helpfull and I havent seen it elsewhere so I dont know if it could be done easily.

The friend thing is rather nice though and Ive seen it at several boards. Before anyone jumps in the popularity issue again friendships are one sided(you add someone as your friend they dont get a message about it or anything) and it just highllights their posts.

Hopefully alex is still keeping an eye on this thread

There are always people who are insecure to the point of complaining about anyone not responding the way they want. There are so many on here who complain that they don't get enough responses, etc. I don't think that a tool that could be enjoyable to most people should not be available because others might get upset over it.

There should also be an option to turn those tools off, so that you don't have to see others rep and you can't give or get rep. Also to turn off the friends part in case you think that people are going to be mean to you. Maybe there is a way that the mods could control that. They could turn off those features for members who seem to have a problem with it. That way they don't see other's rep.

People who want to whine about popularity shouldn't limit the fun of everybody else. There is always going to be somebody, somewhere, who will make everything about them and go on and on about how whatever it is, is something that is being used to bully them and harrass them, and to discriminate and be unfair to them. We can't nor shouldn't "dumb down" everything to the absolute least chance that someone could be upset by something.

Spongy, I just read your thread and I signed up for it. Let me know when it gets to be my turn and what I have to do.

I'd also like to see a spellcheck in the reply form. I sure need it sometimes!

I dont think being for or against repping, is a sign of dumbing down, or not dumbing down?

OliveOilMum, some of your posts, I have noticed quite a few errors of logic. Your post states: also "people who whine' and continue to infer that I (or people who whine....) have a deficiency..... for advocating against a repping feature?

I dont see this as a healthy way to communicate, esp. for someone in your position..... and your rhetoric sounds to me, to have the qualities of veiled personal attack and aggression, that I originally and am still concerned about, when an in crowd forms, and it talks down to those not in it.

If you have a problem with my behaviour, please address me directly.

Rather than inferring in the third person, while disparaging a legitimate concern from an outsider......... so that already appears to me to have validity.... that was my original concern, and it appears to be stacking up as exampled above

I dont care if you dont like me. But I feel your comments have crossed the line of appropriate behaviour for someone in your position. Deriding a member with personal attacks, in the third person, because you disagree with them, or dislike them smacks of school yard bullying, over authoritarian rhetoric and cyber intimidation

Just saying, as others here corrected your lapses in logic aplenty, and have recently intimated similar concerns about aspie authority running amok

WTF? It's got nothing about you, nor is it any kind of a personal attack! I don't care if you say something about my logic. Hell, I know it's not the best. I have no investment whatsoever in being right or wrong about something.

I honestl didn't write that about you, I didn't have anyone in mind when I wrote it, I've talked to people about the rep system and some other ideas before and THEY told me that some people think it's a popularity contest. I think that's ridiculous and I used the whole "dumbing down" idea that's in the media as an example.

Thinking this is a popularity contest has nothing to do with intelligence. It's got to do with sensitivity, or self esteem, or self centeredness, etc, depending on each person's feelings. There is no popular phrase for that, so I used dumbing down. Sort of like how people complain that tests in school have been dumbed down so that more people can pass. That kind of "dumbing down'. Changing or not changing something on the forum so that less people will take it personally.

I honestly don't remember much of anything that you post. I only remember a few people by what they write and their avatar. It has nothing to do with popularity or not, it has to do with what decides to stick in my brain. You didn't. Most don't. I remember your running dog avatar, and I always like it, but that's really all.

I'm not talking down to anybody at all, and it's far from a personal attack. This is an example of taking something personally that wasn't meant personally.

Oh dear. Don't make me have to send you all to bed without supper.

Seriously. Can the tone here be brought down a few notches, on everyone's part?

Instead of a rep system, we could just have a "Thank you" button.

It would cut down on the posts where someone is only quoting said person because they agree, want to say thank you or qft.

It also wouldn't allow for a popularity contest to happen as nobody would gain or lose anything by leaving a thank you or by being thanked.
