I wonder if we can make an alternate poll system for statistical purposes. For example, let's have a poll:

Quote:
Which category do you belong to and how high is your score?
( ) Category 1
( ) Category 2

[submit]

User clicks, for example, on "Category 1" and is asked to fill out a field:

Quote:
Which category do you belong to and how high is your score?
(o) Category 1 - enter exact value here: [123.4]
( ) Category 2

[submit]

User submits the form, then a result message appears:

Quote:
Poll results:
Which category do you belong to and how high is your score?
1) Category 1
Mean: 102.5, SD: 12.2, votes: 5

2) Category 2
Mean: 102.5, SD: 12.2, votes: 5

Overall:
Mean: 102.5, SD: 12.2, votes: 10

I think it would be interesting for some poll types.

Sorry, that's not possible with the current version of phpBB, let alone this fairly old version.
The only type of polling supported is the basic "choose 1 of n" system you've probably seen here already.

Is writing custom modules for it also impossible?

It should be fairly easy to do.

Writing an external polling system could be an option too (users would provide links to their polls). I may do this later for experimental purposes.

It's more a question of urgency of need and likely benefit to the membership as a whole.

The existing polling function is for casual interest and light entertainment value only, with no real intention of generating statistically relevant results, and as such fulfills a useful purpose.

Of course you could still construct a post explaining how respondents should provide data to your questions.

I strongly suspect this is the better option. You can easily provide a link to an externally created system. Definitely not so easy to get changes implemented here.
