Clicking a "like" button is a poor substitute for speaking to someone, IMO.
There's also the issue of those with and those without "likes" being perceived as a popularity contest.

Of course free smileys work here. 8O Like those picked at random, below, from the first site appearing in my "free smileys" Google search.
I simply copy/pasted the provided forum code links, and the plain URLs provided will also work provided [img] tags are added to them in the post.
I'd suggest avoiding the large flashing types because many people here have visual issues - the same generally applies to flashing avatars, too.

Who gets to decide on these updates anyway? Could we have a vote? I really think the "like" idea would be beneficial.

It's Alex's site; these decisions are his alone.
These are also not updates; they're major forum code rewrites and the current version is not under active development.
WP is primarily about the content, not about frilly, sparkly things to make it look like other sites serving a different and much broader purpose.

How would the "like" function really change anything to serve a different purpose?

Actually, one could argue that there are many lonely aspergians that use this site as a social tool as well as a site to vent for advice. I just see my suggestion as beneficial and killing two birds with one stone. I really think Alex should have a poll, or at least consider the idea. I rest my case.

I was thinking wrongplanet music , like if there was some music that people can listen too. Also it would be neat to be able to play checkers, backgammon, spades and hearts. If that can be put up on the forum a spot where people can play games and listen to similar music that would be awesome.

I wouldn't hold your breath - adding that feature alone would probably quadruple Alex's hosting bill. Although I, for one, am totally for that, I don't think it would be enough of a benefit for the users of the site to justify the cost increase.

Because it could be used as a social too it could also make people (on accident for the most part) feel alienated.

veteran user (vu) makes a post that doesn't mean much but a lot of people on this site know him. He get's 5 likes.

New user points out how vu's post was wrong and gives sources explaining a better way to handle it. He get's one (or no) like(s).

I think it would create alienation of members, group liking would probably come around, some people choose this site because they don't want or don't like facebook, and many other reasons I could think of.

As previously noted on the prior thread, at least one other poster suggested adding some form of text-based RPG to WP, and I would add a limited-graphic version (are there any?), and add public source online versions of board games to KateSmith's suggestion above.

Before my time, communities played complex board games by snail mail, and later e-mail. I think it would be a great addition to add such capacity to WP, either directly through the site, or some form of affiliated outside site.

It wouldn't make people feel alienated, your looking at this idea with a glass half empty approach, I look at it as a way for people to thank others for their useful posts and brighten other peoples days when their comment gets a "like".

People don't stop going to Facebook because of the "likes" , but they choose sites like wrongplanet over Facebook because we are all people who can relate to each other as we all are on the autism spectrum. Many of us don't have a lot of friends in real life, so this is a better alternative to Facebook.

I doubt that people would clique up at all.

There's no point in arguing the merits of the suggestion - no one here has the ability to implement them anyway, and the one who can - Alex - has already heard both sides of this particular request multiple times.

Maybe nobody presented their idea with the possibility of likes in the right intriguing way for Alex to like it enough to be willing to give it a try. I still think it would be very beneficial to this forum.

That's great - you presented your argument. Let it lie.

I haven't presented it to Alex, just debated with one or two people here whether it would benefit the site or not.

Not the same thing.

Come on; He hosts in America. Among the cheapest in the world for web hosting.

On the other hand, think of the bandwidth required.

That is my #1 wish for this site too. I'd really like to see a "thanks" button that would add your user name to a list of users at the bottom of the post. It's a great way to give positive encouragement to a poster. It works fantastic on other forums.

Unfortunately it will never happen here. If Alex hasn't seen the need to add something like that in the last ten years, chances are he isn't going to do it in the next ten years either.:(

Aside from the option to " like" or "thank" posts, I've thought of a couple more upgrades.

1. Have a regional forum ( I.E. United States, Europe, Canada, Asia, Africa, etc.) for meet ups

2. Have a better way to upload a photo into a post you make, rather than imbedding the photo in a post like we have to now. It's a pain & I haven't been able to correctly share 1 picture because of it.
