The general impression I get from the uh, what's the word? Engine, for lack of a better word running this site, no offense to anyone running it, seems to be "Fix or Repair Daily".

That youtube link were disabled. I really hate it, when people simply share without any explanation a link instead of writing their oppinion to an topic. If I would prefer verbal communication, I´d not be actually writing in an written forum. -.-

^ I completely ignore YouTubes. It is only if someone has included a narrative that makes it sound really interesting that I bother watching them - which is rare indeed.

Why? Nobody is forcing you to watch the video. Unless your browser is anto-playing it or something, and I don't see that happening.

I think YouTube links are an incredibly useful tool to many people. Especially for "Post a YouTube video" threads or for sharing music.

Some people prefer written communication, others prefer verbal, or visual, audio communications. The site should be all inclusive, and give people as many options as possible. IMHO.

I think the objection addressed the use of a video to make some point in a discussion, with no additional input from the poster so in essence, it's someone else's opinion being posted in a video format.
I've seen videos posted, as the sole response to something said earlier, that are over an hour long.
It's not so much a case of being forced to watch it, more the irritating case that a chunk of the conversation is lost unless it's watched - but an hour or more? Come on...

It seems entirely unreasonable to expect others to sit through this and somehow divine what point the poster intended to make with it and even 15 minutes seems too long, considering how much easier the thread would have continued flowing if a short written response was provided instead - or even the point the poster wanted to make with the video providing optional and more detailed support for it.

Posting videos for entertainment on a music thread, or to make a brief visual quip, or to present something as a documentary-style purpose of a thread's creation is a different thing altogether.

If I understood the OP correctly, she thinks that ability to post youtube videos should be disabled entirely. I think that would very unfortunate. I understand where she is coming from. She doesn't like verbal communication, and would prefer that people limit their posts to text. To me the solution seems so obvious. Just don't click the play button.

I admit that I have posted lots of YouTube videos without comment. Simply because the videos expressed my opinion, better then I could do it myself. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video could be worth a lot more then that.

As for the problem with long videos. I think the problem there, is that there is no way to post a link to a particular part of a video. Actually I think that is possible. I should say it is not possible to imbed a particular part of a video. I know there have been times when I wanted to post of video that I thought was relevant to the thread. But decided that the video was just too long and people would probably not find the relevant part.

Hmm - I was guided by the qualifier "I really hate it, when people simply share without any explanation a link instead of writing their oppinion to an topic" and not clicking the play button is the same as having a post removed: whatever point its creator might have been making is lost, where including a short executive summary would have (1) given their unique opinion on the topic and (2) retained the video for anyone wanting to dig a little deeper.

There is a way to have YouTube URLs include a "start" time (not that I could tell you right now how to do it, but I have seen it ) - this is fine if the point the OP wishes to make is concisely explained within a few minutes of the start point but in the cases I've seen where long videos are posted, it's always in a "this says everything and if you watch it, you'll understand what I mean" sense - and that's where it backfires.
When I watch a video I gain only my opinion of it, not the OP's.
While they might be very similar opinions, any doubt would be removed if the OP would actually state theirs.

Personally, I have no problem with videos being posted but I rarely watch them on discussion threads because of the disruption to the conversational flow: it's like putting the conversation on hold for as long as the video lasts and I'm generally not interested in doing that unless some compelling, relevant reason is given beforehand. "Watch this" isn't enough, I'm afraid.
Discussion threads are by their nature, text-based, because this is the most precise way of someone saying what they mean using their own words. Short videos posted more as a brief comment or visual effect are fine - but unless I'm watching a video with the OP in the same room as me it's correspondingly much more difficult to get an exchange of ideas going.

Leaving the field customizable, as the tag under the username is after 1000 posts, would be useful-- that way, users could define their diagnosis as succinctly or as broadly as they chose [anything from "Suspected PDD-NOS/BAP with co-morbid Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder" to "(Insert Specific Disorders Here)" to "Suspected/Getting Accessed For _______" to "Has difficulty socializing/has sensory issues" to "Hell if I know" to simply "human"].

In reading down the main page, I have always avoided the "Work and finding a Job" forum, as well as "Politics, Philosophy, and Religion" because the descriptive paragraphs sounded so narrow and stilted. How many of us work in cube farms? Do Politics, Philosophy, and Religion need new, novel definitions at all?

I agree. I was diagnosed with HFA when I was a child and I'm questioning it. My profile says "not sure if I have it or not", this probably makes a lot of people confused. I wish I could put "Diagnosed with HFA, but questioning it."
