Alex, for whatever my opinion is worth to you, I would not concern myself too much with losing users due to a design change, even if the users are autistic. It will aggravate them briefly, they may leave for a couple of days, but they will be back because this is the only site with the critical mass of forum users, and because switching sites would be an even bigger system shock anyway.
Ravenclawgurl, this is just what happens. Every time Facebook changes something major, users come out of the woodwork to protest the change. A month later, nobody even remembers that a change occurred and if they go back and look at a screenshot of the site the way it used to be, they think it looks primitive. They have a bit of a longer memory if there are any regressions, but Facebook is pretty thorough about preventing regressions.
