I was wondering if there's a reason why updates to threads are only sent via email, rather then also being notified in-site, like you are with private-messages. (potentially a 4th button like 'updates (x)')

If there's no reason, is there any chance of this feature being worked on? Or allowing community-made content for it?

The reason is... it's just the way the forum software was designed at the time.

This version is very old and no longer under active development, but a new version is being worked on.
There is no estimate of when that will be available but the initial release will first duplicate the features present in this version - and only once that's up and running might new features be considered.
