How do you regard the NECROBUMPING of old threads on WP?

Can be a bit annoying, but it's no big deal for me.

I love NECROBUMPING. Why keep perfectly good information in the grave when I can enjoy it now? Would you burn the Library at Alexandria? Each person can choose what they want.

New information on Pluto had just been released and as that thread acted as a update on the situation then it was definitely appropriate to have bumped it from a few months ago. Exactly where the updates on Pluto belong so it made sense, though it was the OP I think anyone could have in that situation.

I think that the OP can bump their own threads if they see the need to as they own it.

I can see all of the arguments for and against, but I don't overthink it.

I do not oppose necrobumping in principle, but I do understand those who find it irritating at times.

There is value in some of these old threads, where thoughtful comments and quality discussions have occurred. I choose to search out old threads at times because there can be knowledge/wisdom within them that is timeless.

I have seen fairly hostile responses to some users who have bumped old threads over the years, and I was reading a thread today where that was the case.
For this reason, I thought it may be worthwhile for our community to discuss the issue openly.
I appreciate the responses thus far and hope that others will state their views as well.

I like it. Regardless of the content, I like seeing very old dates. The older the better. I sometimes just read it for the sake of responding to it.

I feel the same way. I feel that there's no need for it. I also get embarrassed about how blunt I was, 7 or 8 years ago.

Someone necrobumped an old poll about CRT monitors and at first when I read it I was like "wtf, who uses these pieces of s**t anymore? Did I did trip and fall into a time warp or something?", then I realized it was a thread necrobumped from a decade ago.

I learn things from old thread that started before I got here

I have been on a website where people were criticised for not checking if a previous thread had already be created...

It's annoying when I reply to a thread then scroll up and realise that I've already posted a similar answer, like, 2 years ago. Once I replied to my OWN thread I created! I didn't read the username of the original post, just read the original post and eagerly made a reply.

It's also annoying when I see a thread where someone is asking for advice, and I offer really good advice with great sympathy, only to realise the thread is about 8 years old (before I even became a member here) and the original poster is long gone. I suppose I should remember to look at the date of the original post before posting as well.

But when I very first joined WP, I wasn't sure how to use the forum properly. Instead I just typed in words in the search bar and saw what came up in the results, and clicked on them and replied to them. Then I sometimes found posts yelling that I've ''necroposted'', and I was like ''what does that mean? What am I doing wrong?'' Then I learnt more how to use the forum.

Not a big fan of most necrobumps, but it definitely does not make me angry. I understand why it happens, especially with the site set up with a list of suggested similar, old, topics at the foot of the page.

Personally I feel that threads should be locked after no one has posted for a certain amount of time, say 3 months for example. That way the archive is retained in a read only format, so all the information is still available.

Current members should not waste time making suggestions to someone who has left, was just having a bad day (For example the "Most people on this site don't have aspergers." thread) or possibly only ever posted on the site once.

Agree with everything said, though not sure what time span it should be locked after - 3 months may be too short for some threads.

Sure, whatever time limit was seen as acceptable by the majority of users.
