Why does the captcha even exist? What is its purpose?

Captcha doesn't seem to stop the spambots, so it's useless.

I have a slight suspicion that maybe people are being paid to bypass WrongPlanet's captchas so that the spambots can spam. I've heard of it being done before.

I got blocked from sending messages to my friends on Wrongplanet. I don't know what I did wrong. :x
