I haven't seen this much redacting within such short period of time at least since the USSR. aren't you guys a bit too censor-happy?

there's always been plenty of misogynists and sexists around the L&D subforum but not being able to witness the full extent of their idiocy is kinda ruining my day :P

I, for one, welcome our appointed overlords!

Who ... ME?! !

Actually, members here (including me) can learn a lot about socially acceptable topics of conversation based on the frequency and degree of moderator intervention in that topic. If someone feels they're being continuously picked on by the mods, then maybe it's time for that member to re-evaluate the kinds of posts that he or she makes.

For instance, I rarely post in The Haven any more, because my "shut up and deal with it" philosophy doesn't help (and may actually hurt) someone who has no place else to ask for advice. Also, directing criticism at a member can get a person banned, while directing the same criticism at the same member's actions may not be a bannable offense.

PPR is a free-for-all, and anyone who posts there may as well paint a target on their chest.

yeah but I for one like to read the criticism before I make a rebuttal/make up my mind about the poster. in the past few days, I haven't even had the chance to read some posts because they got redacted with lightning-speed.

if someone insults me, I want to hear the insult! :P I want to know who the petty personal-attacking trolls are. if they get censored quickly, something gets missed in the debate.

I liked the practice of a mod intruding where necessary, quoting the rules and bolded paragraphs and asking everyone to chill and play it nice, sending warnings to the offenders or whatnot. but redacting whole paragraphs is not cool :(

edit* if you were trying to tell me something with this, go ahead and be straightforward, allusions go straight over my head :P

Hear hear!

I actually had some similar worries, although not over the Love&Dating forum since I hardly ever venture there, but one other forum which I frequent more often.

Anyway, we could designate some bots to spew random idiocies for those nostalgic if needed. :P ;)

Maybe you could assign a member as a "Designated Troll", with complete ban-immunity and carte blanche on all topics.

there's plenty of active ones though TallyMan, and they're so entertaining when they run around loose! it's nice that our lovely mods care so deeply about our dignity and our fragile egos, but the Internet needs some righteous-rage-inducing comments! ;P

 I know. I remember the days before I was a mod. The highlight of the day was someone posting outrageous stuff and watching the resulting flame war. Especially if the mods were publicly involved in the events too... much more entertaining than most of the threads on here.

But moderator intervention isn't really needed for people to learn. They could learn just the same way by receiving a negative reaction from other WP members. Ie. Proper social consequences (ostracisation, shunning, negative judgement). The same way they learn in RL.

But then again WP is intended to be a supportive haven and people are given more chances than in RL here.

Moderators have a role of moderating discussions in the positive direction and are doing it the best they can. The fact that some miss drama and are bored by the lack of it isn't particularly convincing argument for leaving offensive material. There are other forms of entertainment in the various media at everyone's disposal.

Some people don't care what other people think. Some people even get off on pissing other people off.

And those are the ones we show the door.

While there is obviously peer pressure at work helping to show disruptive members that their behaviour isn't acceptable, not all negative elements take this aboard and continue to be disruptive or downright hateful to some of the more vulnerable members on the site; that is why moderators exist and moderator intervention is necessary from time to time. WP has been hugely under-moderated in recent months due to a lack of moderators and a lack of time by me and Moog. The situation is now redressing itself.
