Should I become a mod here?

Just answering a post in the mod thread here as requested by Admin.

You actually have to be pretty stupid to want to be a mod here. You also have to be delusional and think you can make a difference. You have to change your posting style , you are no longer allowed an opinion as any opinion becomes Wrong Planet's opinion and there is always constant pushback. You will get called every conceivable name under the sun , get accused of being right wing or left wing. Any respect you did have as a member is lost once you become a mod. And if that's not enough there is always the possibility that you'll be driven round the bend or burnout.

These comments at least make sense.

Being a mod is like being a classroom monitor, in that some of your peers will resent you no matter what you say or do.  And while I do not always agree with their judgements, they are they mods, and they (theoretically) represent Alex.

For the record, I think Joe90 would be an effective mod.

As for me . . .

• Retired, so no job to distract me from moderatorial duties.

• Strong moral/ethical sense (imho).

• Mellowed out since first log-in (imho).

• American English as native language (is this an advantage?).

• Hostile toward racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry (no patience for trolls and spammers, either).

• Sense of humor (it's there . . . somewhere . . . trust me).

• Apolitical or politically neutral (actually, I dislike politics almost as much as I dislike religion).

• My waking hours are during most of the western hemisphere's sleeping hours -- potential for 24-hour coverage.

HOWEVER, I have been banned from this website once -- more than ten years ago, and by a former mod who has since been banned -- and volunteering to be a moderator is almost certain to disqualify anyone from becoming a moderator.

Personally, I can think of a lot of posters who have some traits that might make them suitable (myself included) but who also have points against them that might be disqualifying or at least deserve serious second thoughts.

I'm not sure self-nomination should inherently be points against, especially when most of us could have a pretty solid case made against being made a mod without ever mentioning who nominated the person.

Unwritten rules can be challenged and don't always make sense for the right candidate.

I vote for Misslizard if Alex ever opens new vacancies.

Nothing against you Joe, but you have RSD and there'd be a LOT of rejection and adversity involved with modding here. I mod elsewhere and I was surprised how gruelling it can be to have other people's problems pervade my thoughts 24 hours a day. It's really hard to be immersed in the sordid underbelly of any site, especially when you get invested in everyone's emotional energy and you're directly accountable for any backlash, fallout, or repercussions against yourself and others, as well as the site owner. I don't second-guess my decisions there but I have to deal with the public scrutiny it entails, while trying to protect my own privacy as well. I don't consider myself RSD but I can imagine that would only make it worse.

Imagine how CF's feelings could have been hurt by making false claims about the selection process.

Except that level of slander needs to be background noise in order to be a mod.

I don't have excessive free time just because I come here a lot. I access WP on my mobile device so I can visit WP while traveling (which I do a lot of), if I have free time at work, while I'm waiting for my dinner to cook, and in bed.

Also what did I say? This is a left-wing site, so if you're a mod you have to be left-wing to be able to moderate better. That's what I meant anyway, just seems you might have interpreted it differently.

When I was asked to be a mod, my political leaning was never asked, I don't think I'd ever posted about it either. I trawled the mod room when I was there and politics is not discussed. I couldn't tell you who any mod voted for in any election.

I don't see how your political leaning has any relevance to be able to mod unless of course your political leaning leans into rule break territory which is far right (white nationalism, white supremacy etc).

Admittedly, every mod I worked with was against sexism,racism,homophobia & transphobia, but I see this as having morals more than any political leaning.
