Ads can make a site unusable. Even on major site like newspapers. They are often responsible for script hangs, when all you want to do is read the frigging article and scroll. Instead you have to force you browser to shut down and fire it up again.

Ad blocking is an art. You can do it through user scripting/styles and through popular ad-ons

wow, get over yourself, if you dont like it, dont click on it
this is just an excuse you have made up to complain about things that dont matter

if your silly enough to fall for stupid flashing banners, then maybe you need an ad blocker

im sick of people acting like that, that is exactly how they get peoples attention

i just dont get, out of all the forms of advertising there is on the internet, why block the most non-invasive one, would you rather go back to popups?

You are missing the point. People are free to block whatever they want.

The ad you get here a regional. What you get in oz can be different from what someone else may get. The ad campaigns that are used are open to abuse. People have got ads that the have a problem with there is always that potential. If you are not going to click on them then why not block them?

I don't click on the ads even when I'm using a browser with no ad-blocker. They're still obnoxious and slow down page loads.

You seem very belligerent over this. I think it is you who needs to get over yourself.

Again, since you seem to be rather slow on the uptake... I block all ads. I haven't singled out WP's banner ads to block, I just clicked on one subscription in AdBlock Plus and it got rid of nuisances across the entire Internet.

If you're still getting pop-ups anywhere, you really need to join this millennium and update to a real browser.

I certainly can't see your point.

Personally, I also always block animated avatars. I find it impossible to read a person's post, if their avatar is continuously distracting me.

Plus, I generally skip posts where the poster is regularly employing any "eye catching" effects. E.g. always typing in capitals, changing the size, colour, etc, or any other "style" effects that are distracting from the content of the post, and trying to promote their posts over other peoples' posts.

I find persistent bad spelling, grammar, and so on, distracting, but I usually make allowances there, and try hard to read such posters. The fact is that the poster may have genuine problems in such areas. E.g. they may have dyslexia.

I run a very tightly controlled system so I don't see ads, flashing ones or otherwise. But I just changed all my settings to see WP with its various ads on display. I don't find them particularly obtrusive, though maybe I'm not seeing the flashing ones, which would irritate me.

AdSense revenue has been falling for at least the past year. I've run several sites over the past few years, and noticed the downturn in AdSense revenue on mine, then confirmed it with several other Webmasters and on forums where such things are discussed.

Suggestions for revenue streams for a site like this:

- Amazon affiliates
- Commission junction
- Direct advertising, where people pay to have their ad on the site.

I've done all three, and made varying (usually small) amounts of money at it. But once I got a site established, I was able to cover all my hosting costs. WP is a much larger, older, and more active site than anything I was ever involved in, and I know nothing about its financials.

If anyone wants more info on my experiences with the above ad services, I'll gladly oblige.

I thought impressions also earn $$, does anyone know? That's what I heard about Google adsense. Certain sites I'll whitelist, I thought I was being helpful but if not I'm going to stop bothering.
