Wait, if they don't want to be a mod, wouldn't they not do their jobs as one if they were made one?

I think he meant those that ask for the position aren't best for the job. If the position is offered to them and they accept, that's a different story. We don't need power-hungry mods. That would be baaaaaaad. >.>

So we prefer people who has never thought about it, who are likely ambivalent, possibly don't come into it with anything more than a short-term "Oh wow. I have been chosen amoung the masses, I must show my gratitude in doing this wonderful service in appreciation " kind of feel.
Long term they lose that initial thrust because they mentally justify "Well I never actually asked for the job I was just helping out" attitude.

Can you name which mods over the past 12 months this place had had leave or get turfed and the reason for that?

How is the "

For God's sake...why?

Wow, someone's defensive. I was just offering an idea, it's not like I know how the system actually works. If this is how you react to someone who disagrees with you, maybe you should not be a mod. :/

No I am not defensive? I am flabbergasted by the viewpoints on this and the reasoning. Slight difference but a difference nonetheless. Yes when faced with something totally irrational in my mind I do look for clarification and understanding and do promote my interpretation across.

Maybe I should not be a mod. Maybe I should. I see no reason how my not understanding where on Earth you could possibly be coming from in relation to this seeming link between power-hungry people and promoting oneself to a position they are qualified for relates.

Again you possibly can but it is lost on me.

Even Alex himself said in this thread that the best people for the job are those who don't actively seek it. He's the owner of the site so it's his opinion that you should care about if you really want this job. Hell, you probably will think I'm wrong no matter what I say so it doesn't really matter. :/

I am trying to understand the mindset to be honest. Mindboggling and crazy as it is to my mind. I am trying to find a solid foundation of reasoning to build on that I can at least try to appreciate.

Again Alex has said this and so the question is has Alex got it right in this instance?
You think so? How? How have the mods going through the turnstiles and leading to a mod shortage in any way a validation for the method of choosing mod?
How is Alex going to know everyone on WP well enough to make informed decisions?
See if you answer these questions rationally you will see exactly where I am coming from and further refuting them is bloody hard to do.

I think he has it right here. We don't need someone with a Messiah Complex as a mod. Nominating yourself just makes you look cocky, even though that wasn't your intention. Just because there's a mod shortage doesn't mean the system is failing. The demand is greater than it used to be. Also, some mods may quit because their real lives are more important that moderating WP. There's nothing wrong with having a life. :)

He probably receives nominations from the current mods who have seen users around the forum and he investigates those nominations.

OK You are right I am not being cocky I am being self-assured. I don't have a Messiah Complex but am very much in tune with who and what I am and recognise my benefits and faults.
I think that again even allowing mods to put up nominations is only limiting Alex's potential slightly less. He is stymied again with what they know. If they don't know then he won't know and to think any different starts getting into the treating HIM like a messiah and an omnipotent being with knowledge and appreciation of things that he can not possibly know. This is about getting the best people for the job and not taking a gambling approach but a real decent look born of knowledge of things that would not necessarily pass under his notice. How would one do this? Well you know the answer to this.
Why? Because the hit/miss approach has recently shown a number of mod stuff-ups and bannings and demotions. I can think of three big casualties in the very recent past. I won't name names naturally ;)
(Just to make sure. We are not pretending that they did not happen right? We are not pretending they were good choices?)

It was Plato who said that "those who seek power are not worthy of that power" and the saying has become well known and used since then, so it's hardly a new idea or exclusive to Alex or Wrong Planet.

Hello there Marcia. Long time no see.
Yes Plato did say that and if we use this sane concept imagine the apathy that would abound.
We all love the Sword in the stone and Star wars type tales of the boy thrust into a position they did not ask for but stoically embraces and saves the world/kingdom/universe, but that is just sentimental romance.
In real life more often than not people put their hand up and give their CV/resume/application or reasons why they are best and are judge good or ill by those who would imbue such power.
Am I right?
Or do you have another Philosopher's ponderings that you think may better cast doubt on why this may not work here. Maybe someone who has not been dead for centuries and out touch with modern day society?
No? Great! Good to see you by the way.

Long dead as he is, Plato would no doubt be confounded by much about modern society if he were here now, but I don't think human nature has changed so much.

You think?
I dunno. I see no witch burnings. I see a blatant disregard for the environment and pollution everyday.I see the global community shrinking by the minute and people becoming more informed by the world and less isolated. I see people driven like never before on wave after wave of consumerism. I see the superstitious world of magical and fantastic things beyond the borders of one's domain exposed and destroyed.
I say that the Ancient Grecian's had a very different view of the world than "us". I think that human nature has changed enormously and poor old Plato would be out of touch as the quote you quoted is out of touch with the here and now. Probably would have been very apt to say 3000 years ago and you would have been applauded for such insight though

So, you think modern day people who seek power are all completely altruistic and have no selfish motives or hidden agendas?

As I said, I really don't think human nature has changed that much.

This is true.

As I said in another thread recently, in the 1800's we had public hangings and witch burnings. In the 2000's we have magazines and TV shows created for the sole purpose of allowing the public to laugh at the humiliated celebrities society sees acceptable to spy on.

Nothing has changed. Humans always have been, are, and always will be, power hungry sadists.

All? So long as we are not getting generalist in our comments I can say that not all people who accept power are altruistic and not all people who are volunteered power without asking are altruistic. You have successfully come up with a moot point that has killed your original premise.

So great post Marcia. Plato would be proud.

Lol! I was just reacting to the exchange you were having with Erisad, in which the notion of people seeking power being the very people who shouldn't have it seemed to be unknown to you. That's all. I'm not interested in a lengthy debate about the sayings of Plato, although it would seem to me that the fact that they remain frequently quoted and known, even by those who know nothing of Plato, implies that they are still relevant. No matter. *shrug*

Have you any plans to give us a demonstration of the qualities you have which would make you a good choice for moderator?

Not really. Are you hard up for entertainment?
Is the rest of the gang over here? Is Quickduck or Amy around the corner somewhere? Perhaps Lucy? We should all really get together. It would be like old times. Can you make a few calls?
That would be entertainment :)
