Facebook integration? Really?

Your implying we can take it or leave it, your denying these members their privacy, who here wants their problems plastered all over Facebook, its means members can't talk with some relative anonymity on what is supposed to be a support forum, whats to stop
someone from posting a members deeply personal problems to FB for the world to see.
I beg your pardon, but I do not know that I am doing any such thing. I am denying people their privacy? Did you not think that through properly, or did you phrase what you meant badly?
I am perhaps not wholly cognisant of what might ensue were such buttons to be used, but I won't stand for being told I am denying people of their privacy when this is not the case.
I personally fail to see why it would be so massively privacy breaching, which is why it is a good job there are people around who perhaps can, and can bring such things to our awareness.
No but I don't think you have the facts, heres an article from the Globe and Mail on the Like feature violating peoples privacy
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/tec ... le1718090/
I suggest members with any concerns read this.

Not really, since people who post in threads which become 'liked' end up as inadvertant particpants - whether they wish it or not.
There is no option to opt-out of participating in threads which become linked to Facebook, or any way to tell which threads might already be 'liked' or might become so. Therefore people who have no wish to participate only have the option to stop posting altogether, or to limit their posts to inconsequential 'chit-chat'.
Many people use Wrong Planet because it is a safe haven away from the misunderstandings of the 'social world'. This could be like putting up a sign which says "Come and jeer at the freaks."
Does the 'like' button show for anyone who reads a thread, or is it only WP members?
(Not that it really makes a difference, since a 'troll' can easily become a member.)

I guess I am forced to choose whether I will close my WP account, or my Facebook account. But clearly, one of them has to go. This is just getting too mainstream for me. I came here for a haven from that crap, not to be forced to participate even if by mistake.
The problem is that closing your Facebook account doesn't limit what other people do with the 'like' button, so the only real choice is to decide whether to continue to use WP.
From the article Friskeygirl cited:
Quote:
When other websites offered the button, unwitting users saw their likes exposed or promoted on media, entertainment or retail websites that offered the button.
Even before the feature was added, anyone who wanted to could post a link to any thread on Facebook. Threads on wrong planet have always been public. If you want privacy, use an anonymous name.

if it was up to me this whole forum would be members only

We can't. We're not allowed change our usernames once we've registered (trust me, otherwise I would have). I have sent you a PM before requesting to change my name, but I understand if that got lost under a bunch of other things.
We're also not allowed duplicate accounts and the mods can see IP addresses so they know who has a second account.
I'm not sure why I chose this username when I first joined; it was stupid of me and I realised that about a year later when I started using this site more regularly. I do value my privacy, a lot. It was just a mistake I made a few years ago and I do think it sucks a bit that I may have to quit WP to feel more secure because of that. I've heard similar stories from other members too.
If there were an option to change my username to something even more anonymous, I would gladly take it.

Yes, but now anyone can accidently post a link to facebook by accidently pressing its stalker button, and it's a lot easier to be trigger happy with the 'like' button than in the good ol' days when you manually had to copy and paste the link; at least in those few seconds you had time to rethink.
Seriously Alex, having a 'like' button on this website just makes a total mockery of what is apparently a support site. There is even have the option to 'like' the threads of people posting about committing suicide in the Haven, which, quite frankly, is sick.
I agree with Zen Mistress and Katzefrau; most of the subforums here should be members only (I can slightly understand people 'liking' the games or random discussion section, but that's all the more reason to make the Haven et al. off limits to non members).
we'll see, its just something to toy with for now. If somone types up an amazing post that is very insightful, it might be interesting to see people click like on it so their friends may notice it as well. Whether good or bad I think it will probably be of little consequence 90% of the time either way.
Thanks for considering it at least TOGGI3; I'm glad it's just being toyed with for the moment.

What I don't understand is why they couldn't just manually copy and paste their text to their own facebook account/blog? Their friends could still read their 'amazing' statement and nobody else would be involved. Otherwise it seems as if they would be inviting their friends to come and gang up on whoever they were arguing against.
To be honest, think it will affect things more than 10% of the time. Already, I feel creeped out posting on this thread because one anonymous person has 'liked' it. The only reason I am posting at all here is because I hope the awful decision can be reversed. In future, I will avoid any other 'liked' thread like the plague and delete any of my comments written if someone 'liked' it afterwards.

Wow I hadn't thought about the implications of the like button this in depth! That is sick. Not that sick bothers me but wow there is something wrong with allowing people to show off that people are committing suicide and you like it!

Agreed. A lot of people have posted some very personal stuff on here, and the last thing they would want is numerous trails from people's facebook pages leading here. I would have hoped that the only people who seek out this board are people with a genuine interest in Aspergers or autism, not "gawkers".

I really don't think this has crossed Alex's mind, there are some topics that really shouldn't be seen on facebook, I am sure its going to attract all sorts of attention if members start liking all the kinky stuff in the adult thread, or some of the topics covered in L & D or PPR.

The entire of the membership should be made fully aware that they are just something for you to "toy with".

You know, you dont have to be so negative all the time lau and twist the meanings of people's words. You can deal with something as minor as experimenting with a 'like' button without having an attitude, instead perhaps trying to speak more constuctively. I'm trying to be nice here, but you sometimes make it really difficult.
We are not toying with 'the entire of the membership', in the sense of how the word 'toying' is generally used in regard to with people, we are toying with an idea as in introducing potentially beneficial features for people to try, if you dont like it fine, but dont suggest that we are toying with people, I find it insulting and I don't believe I have done anything to merit such an insult from you, and I have thus far, until this moment, tried my best to get along with everyone here and make things work for everyone.
If you have more destructive negativity to add about how malevolent the developers are and out to get you, I dont want to hear it anymore and have no more patience for it, and would further prefer you just leave in that case and not let the door hit you on the way out. On the other hand, if you want to start participating in a manner consistent with being constructive and helpful, welcome and enjoy your stay at the wrong planet. I cant be everyone's friend forever.

Interesting slant you have here - you are threatening to ban me, because of what rule?
Would it be the rule: "I don't agree with where WP is going"?
Or are you saying that WP has already gone?
I have changed none of my opinions about what was good about WP. It does seem that that it is becoming the past tense. WP is just becoming a home for people who like flashy graphics and preferably say nothing about autism.
========
For this page... I note...
http://validator.w3.org -> "Result: 95 Errors, 71 warning(s)"
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator -> "Sorry! We found the following errors (62)"
I recall these figures being a little lower, when I last checked how broken WP was.
For http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum13.html which includes the new flashing headines, the figures are considerably worse: "Result: 151 Errors, 267 warning(s)"
I attempted to cure some of these problems, plus other failings of the patched PHPBB2 code, when I had the opportunity to do so. The list of outstanding problems that I posted was deleted, but I could repost it elsewhere, I guess. The current regime seems to be to try to reach some sort of maximal number of errors, by introducing more and more untested playthings.
=========
The poll here mirrors my opinion of the "enhancements" being made, although I could expect that balance to change, once the influx of people with no interest whatsoever in autism start arriving from Facebook - given that this thread has already had one FB "Like" vote.
