One thing I want to add is that I'm still learning the ropes of moderating. I certainly don't have the answers for everything nor have I worked out how best to deal with some thorny member issues yet, but I want things to be as transparent as possible so members know in principle what I'm doing and how I go about things, and perhaps to clear up some misconceptions and mysteries along the way. I'm far from perfect and have made one or two small blunders so far but am learning. Perhaps some view it as a weakness allowing myself to become involved in these sort of threads where I leave myself open to criticism, but I want to be approachable and helpful and not seen as some distant power-mad being who descends periodically to dispense his wrath on unsuspecting members!

I'm just an ordinary member with a few extra buttons on my screen, a set of site rules and input and guidance from other moderators and Alex himself. DW_a_mom has also helped enormously with her advice. I'm doing my best to help keep WP a place where members can all get together and discuss things in a friendly way and not be persecuted by anyone - including other members.

Just to clarify one thing. In theory at least it is possible for a members username to be changed. But only Alex can do that and he is very reluctant to do it because it messes up the boards and what people have quoted in posts by those members.

A different issue is creating an entirely new user account.

I do not believe that is accurate, and that is why I posted as I did in defense of past moderators' actions.

I don't follow what you are saying. What appears to be inaccurate, can you clarify please?

Sure, and please know I am not in any way meaning to take you to task!

As someone else has mentioned, a change of user name is a change of user name no matter how that might get done, and a change of user name is simply not allowed unless Alex decides to make an exception.

Yes, that is the case.

It's not fun. I only do it because otherwise, you lot would be drowning in excrement.

@TallyMan - Of course your private/professional life should come first, but I would be very sad to see you go (as a mod) - I think you're doing a great job. You're approachable and efficient, that's a very good combination.

Edit: not that others aren't good, but I understand there's too few of them as it is for such a large forum

I don't believe that. If you didn't do it, someone else would.

Oh nm tallyman already answered that and I have seen people create new accounts just so they say something to a user here because they couldn't have the guts to say it under their own username. To me that is just cowardly.

If someone creates a 2nd account simply because they want to use a new name (and stop using the old account), and they are honest about it, the new account will be banned. I don't know or care if that falls under the "sockpuppet" label, but I know that being honest and up front about it doesn't work.

Unless they complain to Alex about the unfairness of it all. Then Alex uses it as an excuse to get rid of all the mods. I know it is a inconvenient truth for the current mods, so watch me catch hell for even mentioning it!

I am sorry you never got your wish to be a moderator of WP, Superboyian. I know it is a disappointment for you. I never thought moderating was 'fun', actually. But I appreciate your caring about my welfare, it shows me what a good soul you are.

Clearly you are not overburdened with empathic thinking. I mod because of duty, and even that is draining away. Especially because of the ingratitude of those I am doing it for.

I feel you have done a yeoman's job of it, too, TallyMan. I thank you for your service to WP. I have watched your even hand and eternal willingness to make WP a good place to be and know your sacrifice and devotion it takes to do what you have done. I, too, am saddened that your duties take you elsewhere than WP, but I hope and wish for you the best in all you do.
Sorry if I was a trial to you, I had a lot to work out, but I appreciate your patience with me. (and all of the mods patience with me, for that matter.)

Merle

So... I don't need to be a WP moderator, I wouldn't care less anyways if I was or not, it's just a forum so technically I ain't bothered by it.
What made you think I have a good soul?
All I said was half true.

I appreciate what you are doing, although I haven't seen the before-and-after results plus your personal contribution in the whole - I just know things run rampant on a forum if you don't moderate it. So here is a little pat on the shoulder for you so to say.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

I'm still here but will be devoting less time to WP as I have to concentrate more time on other things. My financial future is somewhat uncertain at the moment and I need to secure that as priority.

phew!

we need to increase revenue on WP so that we can pay moderators (unless it is a philosophical decision to keep you as volunteers). but we are a penniless lot.
