I was once called an idiot for a statement I made about a person's preference for viewing violent and graphic images of non sexual violence. I did not attack the person, only the preference. It so happened that the person was in some sort of relationship with someone mentioned in one of Alex's Autism Videos. This I discovered after I clicked on the profile page of the person who labelled me an idiot, and a troll. I answered in my calm, reserved manner and did not ever report this to the mods because of the person's relationship to Alex. This person was/is young, and the ideas expressed rather foolish but I chalked them up to youthful naivete. This person does not seem to contribute to WP any more.
Others' opinions of me do not define who I am.
This might be good advice.

This isn't a free pass for bad behavior and you should certainly always feel free to report anyone who is misbehaving.
