One thing I have noticed here is even criticizing Trump or say how we feel about him, someone here who supports him will take these comments as an attack on their character.

I see criticism about Biden all the time, I don't feel any attack on my character.

I have seen other comments online like "only commies would vote for Biden" or saying how bad our country will get if Biden wins into office like our country will become dystopian.

I guess I don't take these things too personal.

Bully was an existing word and that got redefined somehow in the past.

I am sure other words we have now will also evolve in the future.

Yes, that's inevitable. But imagine if a small town somewhere decided amongst each other that calling someone a rapist is just a generic insult with no further connotations. Then they use that word outside of their in-group and someone reacts strongly to being called a rapist out of the blue. Do you think saying "it's okay, we've redefined that word" would hold water?

Just like some people use a definition of racism that means that black people can't be racist by definition. It's not that they're using a "newer, more updated, more enlightened" dictionary. It's that they're wrong.

Alex, all of our attempts to reason with you have failed. There was I time I would have thanked you for creating the place where I met my husband, and found acceptance among people who share my struggles.

In the last few days you've made many deeply troubling comments that, among other things, promote ableism. I don't know where everyone else stands, but I personally don't feel comfortable with you speaking on our behalf as an ASD advocate.

You've lost the plot.

Furthermore, you harm the anti-racism and BLM movement by making sweeping generalizations, that will inevitably push people away from the ultimate goal.

While I understand that people may have issues with being called racist if it's unfounded, I think we can deal with figuring out how to prevent that from happening in a constructive manner.

I think the issue is the definition of the word racist has changed from meaning just a hateful person who genuinely believes that people of another race are inferior to meaning someone who says something or does something that is problematic to another race. For instance, a lot of people would say it's racist to use certain expressions that are unique to black culture even though obviously it's likely not coming from a bad place. Even saying "yas queen" as a white person would be viewed as racist by a number of black people.

Clearly the membership here is not as up-to-date with that shift in understanding as I thought and I do apologize for not realizing that I'm probably in a bubble working in the entertainment industry and living in a progressive coastal city. I think that would be a valid point to make regarding the new guidelines. It appears a lot of people still see the term racist in the older more specific tone. So that's a discussion we should have about it.

Fair enough. I also agree about the west coast entertainment industry bubble.

That said some of us are up to date but just do not agree with the change in meaning and think it is divisive. I am afraid of the "slippery slope". By some newer definitions, all whites are racist because of the privilege(another expanded definition) of being the beneficiaries of systematic racism. I wonder where this all ends. I still have free thought. I am not obligated to automatically agree with and follow the changes just because it is deemed progress by influencers or is generally preferred by younger people.

Particularly in Wrong Planet with autistic people, I would imagine we would care about definitions, being literal, and be less likely to accept change for change's sake.

Alex, I think it would be a good idea to ad some disclaimer to this website warning everyone about the word racist and how the definition of the word may vary depending on location but the definition or racism is under the American standard and perhaps post a link to a page talking about the meaning of the word racism.

It's not even american standard. It's "progressive bubble" special edition.

I see what you're saying and I totally get that. I think the issue I have is that people are calling for us to enact a rule about specifically choosing to treat the racist word in the way that not everyone views it. I do think choosing to make a hard and fast rule against it would be biased when it's clear not everyone views it that way. I also think it's problematic to police how black people talk about race as a white person so I don't feel comfortable with it from that angle as well...

It's not about banning the word, it's about treating "you're racist" as a personal accusation just like all other kinds of "you're a bad person".

Maybe eventually the entire English language will be redefined, and they won't like that so it will have to be redefined again, and again, and eventually...I dunno. :P

The english language is messy and bizarre enough without manual recalibration from the Californian progressive "intelligentsia".
