A support site for those affected by ASDs and their friends and family. That entails the freedom to reasonably express one's opinions -and- the responsibility to maintain a safe environment for all which that umbrella covers.

What do I look for?

First I look for members who are attacking other members. It is against WP rules. And it shows that the poster doesn't have the intellect (or whatever) to argue the points, so just attacks the person who made them.

And I look for topics which are deliberately made to inflame those who believe differently... topics that ask questions similar to "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?"

Other than that I pretty much let people do their own thing... of course I'm usually in the politics/religion section, and I have to be a little permissive there because it is such an adversarial section.

I know I don't make these decisions based on the person's beliefs, because I have warned far more liberal atheists than I have conservative christians.

I prefer clarity and I think this whole thread is way over-reactive.

There is a difference between being told "careful the floor is wet and slippery" , and receiving an official warning for misconduct in your pay-packet. In this case the person posting posted the earlier kind of warning, a "heads up" intended to minimize the risk of one or more people being on the receiving end of a much less pleasant kind of warning.

I'd rather read a generalized "watch your step" directed at no one in particular, than get a personalized "hey you stepped over the line" message in my PM box. To me the warning was a courtesy notice intended to help prevent people getting carried away and perhaps having to be "officially warned" or worse. That's not authoritarian so much as authoritative.

Pro-active prevention seems more pleasant for all involved than after the fact enforcement.

I have noticed that you have the same attitude.

Has it occured to you that at times the mods are actually following up on a mountain of complaints from members?

I was wondering that, was there an actual complaint about the thread celebrating the humour of the "isn't" site?

I didn't join this site to be part of an NT support group and I find claims that this site exists to support NTs spurious (expressed as 'family and friends'). If there's been a shift in the ethos of this site I prefer that I and other members are clear about it.

Wrong Planet is the web community designed for individuals (and parents of those) with Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, PDDs, and other neurological differences. We provide a discussion forum, where members communicate with each other, an article section, with exclusive articles and how-to guides, a blogging feature, and a chatroom for real-time communication with other Aspies. Asperger's Syndrome, a pervasive development disorder, is a form of autism. People with Asperger's Syndrome usually have normal or above normal IQs. Asperger's can be described as an inability to understand how to interact socially.

Would you like me to be frank about my own opinions? Or at least as frank as possible without you screaming in terror?

I view this website as a support site for people with Asperger's. This being said, people seem to trumpet their individual rights as opposed to their actual responsibilities. MattShizzle is particularly guilty of this, as is the OP.

We moderators have a responsibility to the entire BBS, not just to individual members, and to be quite frank, we really do use a soft touch. I personally struggle with the responsibilities of this role as a moderator, and anyone who thinks that I would ban without good reason is ignorant, at best. Don't think that I have not been tempted, though. To be tempted is human. But I have not been overcome, despite what some of you think. I take my responsibilities very seriously.

As far as WP being pro-NT, pro-cure, pro-aspie, I have only personally detested those who are either pro-cure, or rabidly one way or another. As far as aspie politics are concerned, I only detest those who either deny AS exists, or else want to cure us. Other than that, I have very little opinion in the matter.

We will not, however, extend support to those who set out to disrupt other people's normal, nondisruptive enjoyment or usage of this BBS. Regardless of what other problems, personal, medical, or otherwise, autistic or NT, we can at least act like decent human beings. If you don't agree, then you don't belong here. This may seem hard, but people who deliberately set out to hurt others for no other reason than power trips or perverse enjoyment don't deserve a place in any society, much less this BBS, where there are more vulnerable members than mainstream internet BBSes.

I really think any website accesible from the US should be forced to have full free speech for the members or be blocked. And if their server is located in the US it should be taken over by the government with no compensation to the owners. I don't hate NT's but I hate authoritarianism and feel this site is way too much:

Again, it's in the description of AS that we don't like rules with no good reason and extremely ridiculous stuff like no cursing. I wouldn't want to see it be like 4 chan type anarchy but it doesn't have to be the Taliban.

You're a classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain.

Rules have a reason. This is a support site, primarily. And a relatively family-friendly one, for that. Your actions and words are not supportive or even respectful of others. Quite the opposite, in fact. You merely want the freedom to be a malcontent, without heeding the consequences of your actions. Freedom is an illusion, without responsibility.

As for your assertion that this is like the Taliban, I would say that it is closer to Australia than Afghanistan.

I'm not confused. I'm outraged. And amused by the hypocrisy that he doesn't seem to be aware of. He has clearly never read Atlas Shrugged, although to be fair, I wouldn't inflict that 'novel' on anyone.

I'd say the post shows that he doesn't understand the concept of free speech and exactly when it does - and does not - apply. All combined with the US concepts of private property and the role of government.

Matt, free speech is not and never was a free for all. Most of the rules of this site are, actually, quite consistent with the legal limits that are currently allowed on free speech in the US. Free speech does not allow one to attack broad groups of people, use offensive language where children may be present, and so on. Allowing such things would be exactly the type of things that WOULD get this site shut down. What free speech DOES do is allow you to criticize the powers that be, and no one has stopped you in that regard, have they?

But, still, do understand that this site is private property and is, thus, legally free to restrict free speech if the owner sees fit. The US has great respect for private property rights, as long as they aren't being used to spread hate.
