This isn't facebook.. I've had a bit of the same problem on facebook, I think most people here have. It's difficult not to transfer the experience, but try not to judge people on WP based on people from high school, it's not really applicable.
On facebook, you tend to get blocked for generally acting like an aspie... it would be kinda silly for someone to come HERE and then block people for acting like apies.

Yes, I can manage and work around a bit of genuine aspieness. It's deliberate mean behaviour being enabled by 'aspieness' I don't feel ok with.
Often someone who has a problem with this happening to them will feel alone, and the responsibility is on them to find a way to define and explain what's happening in a way that a mod would get the situation. A message trying to do that might come off wrong as well.
Maybe collecting info, like an automatic log of who gets their posts concealed, could be helpful? It's concrete, clear, and moves it beyond 'he said she said' territory. Also if there were a few people using the report function, it'd be plainer to see if it's common behaviour by a member in question or not.
I don't know if it's possible or a practical solution, because there's a real possibility for abuse of the report function, but it's a start to be thinking about it.

Right.. and when you've gotten in trouble for aspiness before, it's hard to insist that what someone else is doing isn't aspiness, even if it's fairly clear. Some people get banned and feel like they didn't do anything wrong, while others feel like they can get away with anything. How would the report system be abused? That would only really be true if the reporting did something automatically. I think usually what it does is add the reported post to a moderation queue. Sometimes the person reporting something has to put in why they're reporting it, either in text or from a list.

actually, none of that is necessary, Maggiedoll. The beauty of moderating a forum like this is every post is there to read, by anyone. Unless it is in PM that one is being harassed (and that is just as simple as a cut and paste to a mod) each and every post is evaluated by it's own merits. Just post the link to the thread (by clicking on the little dog eared page icon at the top of every post and when the page refreshes with the post at the top, copy the link in the address bar and past it into a PM to a mod.) If the rules are violated, if bullying is present, if they are not in the spirit of support that is the hallmarks of WP, then there are consequences.
We moderate so our members don't have to. So if you have any question about any member's behaviour, just post it to a mod. The moderation team will do the research and evaluate each situation by it's own merits.

Thanks Sinsboldly, I learned how to link a single post specifically just then from that. Handy. ^_^
Maggiedoll, about the abuse of the report button I mentioned, I just meant what if people click it because they don't like the member and are trying to get them in trouble? But still it would be a good idea to have the buttons, if only to let the mods see if the same things happen a lot from the same members.
Woah.. I hadn't noticed that that thing was a link before.. I thought it was just like a little thing to look pretty or something..
That's true.. but reporting for something that wasn't wrong would still reflect more on them than on the person being reported. It'd just be easier & less scary. I just feel whiny when I PM a mod.. I know having a report button wouldn't actually be different, but it'd feel different.
I set up a phpBB just to see, and it put in the little exclamation point to report posts automatically.. I'm not even sure how I'd go about removing that feature if I didn't want it. (but not an ignore button.. but of course, the only post was an automatic admin welcome.. and of course that was the newest version, WP has been around awhile, so I'm sure it's not such a new one.)

WP is ancient and chopped up pretty good, actually. Spit, bailing wire and duct tape, but we are rollin' along.

I thought there were usually like update wizard things, but I guess that'd bring the whole site down for like a long period of time?
Another problem is that when there are offensive posts (like the one that's spam and the one that's another attack on amanda baggs, both of which are now on the main board) I'm not quite sure who to PM.. I pmed you, but I don't know who is going to be on at any given time, and I don't want to spam y'all by sending a PM about the same thing to every mod.. With a report feature, it goes into the moderation queue so that any mod can access the report.
(Or should I just be sending the same message to all the active mods..? or is there some way of knowing who is online that I don't know about?)

on this link : http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum13.html
there is this link: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt67102.html
and this link: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt76158.html
and if there are any Frequently Asked Questions, there is this link:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt32554.html
they are the first three stickies on the : WrongPlanet.net Discussion
and that is why they are there, because that is how the mod team rolls. Just spam the heck out of us, we would rather not miss any thing! We have moderators in England (Lau), North America(Merle, Maku and LabPet) and Australia(QM), so someone is on most all the time.

Okay, NOW I feel stupid. Something about stickies that say "Read This First" that makes me kinda blind to them.. like the Read Me text that comes along with a file, or the EULA on software that I already know I'm gonna use anyways. Unless it's like an eating disorder forum where certain things can't be mentioned, forum rules are almost always the same.
Is it totally bad and bratty of me to point out the obvious problem with taking a post that really shouldn't exist in the first place, like the slander ones, and putting a link to it into a sticky at the top of the forum? 'Cuz getting more people to see the inappropriate posts is exactly what the posters want. Well, I guess that unless you get sick of my PMs, I'll just keep messagin' ya about 'em.
Given that I'm blind to stickies at the top of forums, I don't know how to suggest to make it so that more people know when to PM who about problems, and I think some people who have been reading this thread are a little more comfortable with the idea that mods actually do want to hear from members more, but I think there are still a lot of people who I think are afraid that if they complain about inappropriate posts or bullying, that they'll be seen as causing trouble. I'm not really sure what can be done about that, though..
Seems like every single post Maku makes regarding an issue, he is on one knee asking for another members or all members to provide input / feedback.
I don't know how to make it any more clear that members should not be afraid of the mods, especially since they are nearly begging for feedback, perhaps keeping this particular thread alive is a start.
Truth is most mods seem to be a part of, instead of apart from the community, they should have equal respect as other members, no more and no less, so far, i have not witnessed any intimidation tactics, but I'm new, and a smart-ass, so maybe their just being nice till I become 101% addicted.

first 500 posts are free, then we make ya' pay!
but actually we DO make you pay if you stay on the site, but not money, (unless you want to contribute and can.) But by messaging the mods when you see something pop up. We are member run, member modded, no body other than members here, except for Alex, who owns the site.
