I can find a single component for a computer that costs £6,000 + the rest.

the hardware in a server will contain parts that are designed to flow with reliability with multiple processors, and each processor will have multiple cores. Each processor will have to have its own allocation of memory. The memory itself is not your standard stuff. Then there is the hard drives which will probably use RAID 5/6/50/60 using faster SCSI arrays.
Servers will usually have an extra PSU and UPS which aren't cheap for high end hardware. Then there is the choice of server operating system. Windows based will cost a lot.

Still want to ask if it really costs this much?

I can build a computer for more than $5,000 easily

Not everyone takes computers apart for a living and hobby.

I still smell a rat.

Well, since my last post in this thread it is much faster, faster than the site was when I joined in October 2009. Well done.

Alex why are you still asking for a new server? Is it gonna make it run even faster than instantly?

True, but if you was to built a super computer, wouldn't you need to buy extra parts?
I always wanted to build my computer but I don't really know where to start?

Thank you Alex. I think the upgrades of this website's server really helped. :)

Yes, things are now speed of light fast Alex :D

And more reliable too (no more database errors or the dreaded video screen)

Just to clarify, yes the cost will be pretty much the stated donation goal.. within $300 of the donation goal, infact. Wrongplanet needs the donations of it's members to remain financially secure.

I just want to make it clear that AXLROSE was not silenced, apparently he was a returning troll just here to stir up trouble.. As an employee of the host Alex (and consequentially wrongplanet) is now I under I can say assuredly that the donation goal is not unreasonable or overinflated.

I agree. I'll need a credit card though to help even more.

We need continued donations to keep ourselves awesome, don't we?

I think the donation section should stay, even after the current goal of paying for a new server. I'm not certain the billing cycle for the colo fees, but perhaps having a goal in the vicinity of paying for those. I know I'd likely regularly contribute. I am a member of other sites that have a donate link specifically for that function.
