After all of those rules got hit, I basically wiped out the anti-spam ruleset. The likelihood someone hits a modsecurity rule similar to the ones discussed in this thread would be pretty low.

I'm afraid you are wrong. Various members were pointing out the many places they were getting hit by the ruleset, immediately after they were introduced.
I.e the likelihood that the rules caused problems was close to unity, from day one.
I'm still waiting to hear which rule was detecting that I was using more than three general format BBCode URL links in one post. That had to be quite a complex (and server-time-expensive) rule.

I love how the firewall is being so anal. Sextuple times I've noticed some words get away with it and others don't. So big cockup on the firewall's part
